Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1922.
Application filed March 23, 1920. Serial No. 368,180.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. STOUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Halstead, in the county of Harvey and State of Kansas have invented new and useful Improvements in Trowels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trowels for finishing cement pavements and the like and the principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby the pavement may be provided with the grooves for dividing the same into blocks and also have its edges rounded off.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for securing a firm grip for the hand so that the trowel may be firmly held in performing both operations.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the trowel.
Figure 2 is a transverse section showing the trowel in position to form a groove in the surface.
Figure 3 is a like View showing the trowel as being used to round off the corner.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the device.
In these views 1 indicates the body of the trowel which is of substantially rectangular shape with one of its diagonal corners rounded off as at 2. An opening 3 is formed in the body to form a hand hold. One side of the body is provided with an extension 4 which has its outer face forming a continuation of one face of the body so that this face of the body is of greater width than the opposite face. The inner face of this extension forms a continuation of one of the walls of the opening. A longitudinally extending flange 5 is formed on the wide face of the body midway its side edges, said flange curving upwardly over the curved end of this face. The narrow face of the body is provided with a flange 6, the outer face of said flange being flush with the side edge of the body, while its inner face is slightly inclined as shown. This flange has one end curving upwardly over the curved end of the narrow face. The inner face of the extension is provided with thickened portions 7, for engaging the knuckles of the hand when the trowel is being used to form a groove in the cement surface. 7
As shown in Figure 2 when it is desired to form a groove in the cement surface the wide face of the trowel is placed in engagement with said surface so that the flange on said wide face will form the groove. The curved end of this face and the curved end of the flange will permit the trowel to he slid along over the cement surface without digging into the same. In this position the flange on the narrow face will act to facilitate the hand securing a firmer grip on the device.
hen the trowel is to be used to round off the corners as shown in Figure 3 the narrow face is used with the extension on the wide face and the flange thereon acting as a hand hold.
By my invention the one trowel may be used to perform the two operations so that it is not necessary to carry two different kinds of trowels to the work.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel. features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A trowel of the class described comprising a body of rectangular shape and having one of its diagonal corners rounded off, said body having an opening therein to provide a hand hold, an extension provided on one side of said body and the outer face of said extension forming a continuation of one face of the body so that said face will be of greater width than the opposite face, the inner face of said extension forms a continuation of one of the walls of the opening, a longitudinally extending flange being provided. on the wide face of said body and midway its side edges thereof, said flange curved upwardly over the curved end of this -face, a flange provlded on the narrow face of said body and the outer face of said flange being flush With the side edge of said body and its inner face being slightly inclined,
said flange having one end curving np- WILLIAM M. STOUT.
