IMPLEMENT FOR HANDLING AND WORKING CONCRETE.

Application filed April 18, 1927.

This invention relates in general to hand tools and has for its object to provide an improved implement for handling and working materials such as concrete and the like. This is a combined tool that serves the purpose of a scoop or shovel for carrying concrete and other materials as, for example, from a mixing box or pile to a bed in which the concrete is to be laid, and it also serves for leveling the top of the concrete and for smoothing it. The tool is characterized by a flat bottom scoop which has a scraping blade at its heel end and a handle by means of which the scoop may be used for lifting and carrying materials and also used for working the tool back and forth on a bed of concrete for leveling and smoothing the top.

Referring more particularly to the draw ing the implement comprises a shovel or scoop 4: ha ing a broad, flat bottom 5, preferably quadrilateral in shape, a scraping blade 6 at the heel end of the scoop, and a handle 7 properly attached so that it may be used for the purposes intended. These parts may be of any suitable material and shape not inconsistent with the purpose of the invention, although in the preferred embodiment the scoop and blade are of a heavy gauge sheet metal. Inthe example shown the marginal edges 8 ofthe scoop are turned up for reenforcmg and suitable cor ner braces 9 are welded or otherwise secured to the upturned sides 8 and to the blade 6 for maintaining these in rigid relative relation. In this instance the blade (3 is integral with the scoop and is shaped to provide a straight scraping edge 10 coincident with the heel end of the scoop. The implement-is designed primarily for leveling and smoothing the top of a concrete bed and for laying or handling the concrete required. its use as a scoop for lifting and carrying material such as sand, gravel, or concrete will be obvious. After the concrete is laid in the bed the implement is used for distributing and spreading. For

this purpose the implement is drawn toward the operator and the blade 6 may be dug into the material as deep as necessary. In the work of leveling the scraping edge 10 removes the material from the high spots and carries along for filling in the hollows. After the concrete has been distributed and leveled the implement is worked back and forth over the top, its broad, flat bottom serving to i'orm a flat level surface and to gii e the smooth effect desired for a concrete floor, sidewalk, road bed, or'the like. The implement is not, however, limited to use with concrete but is well adapted for laying, levelingand smoothing a bed of sand or any other loose material. The implement is also a labor saving factor since it serves the purpose of two or more hand tools heretofore commonly used for the same work.

I claim:

1. An implement for handling and working loose materials such as concrete comprising a scoop having a broad flat bottom and a scraping blade at its heel end, and a handle for manipulating the implement either as a scoop or for leveling and smoothing the top of a bed.

2. An implement for handling and working loose materials such as concrete comprising aflat bottom scoop having a scraping blade the scraping edge of which is coincident with the heel end of the scoop, and a handle attached to the heel portion of the scoop whereby it may me manipulated for lifting materials and for leveling and smoothing the top of a bed.
