To all whom it may concern.
e it known that'I, FRANK J. KoLsoN, a citizen of the United States of America,re siding at McKeesport, in the county of lleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Scrapers and Smoothers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the-accompany-v ing drawing...
This invention relates to a combined scraper and smoother especially designed for the use of brick-layers and cement and concrete kworkers.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a novel tool having detachable smoothing members of various shapes and contours, whereby the tool can be used by brick-layers or cementworkers for produc-Y ing beads, joints or surfacesof various contours. fr f, v
Another object of this invention is to piovide a eombinedseraper and -smoother with a detachable and adjustable member v,that permits of grooves of various depths` and cross sectional area being produced by-\an artisan working with mortar, plaster concrete, cement or other plasticpmateria A further object of this invention is to accomplish-the above results by a strong and durable tool consisting of comparatively few parts that arc easily assembled and highly etiicient for the `purposes for which' they are intended. f
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the lnovel construction, com bination and arrangement of parts to be. hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will no'w be had to the draw ing, wherein Figure 1 1s a side elevation of a'tool in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig.
3 is a plan of the tool, Fig. L is a cross sectional view of the same, Fig. illustrates cross sectional views of portions lot'f'smooth` ing or shaping members, and Fig. G illustrates similar views of other members. 50
-A tool in accordance with this invention comprises'a metallic saddle 1, having the lower longitudinal edges thereof provided with lateral flanges2. The saddle l` has an inclined front wall 3 provided with a longitudinal slot 4, and .the top of said saddle terminates in a rearwardly directed exten,-
forth.

sionl 5 that serves functionally as a handle for manipulating the tool. The sidewalls of the saddle 1 are in parallelism andides tachably mounted between the sidewallsof" said saddle and engaging the front and topV walls thereof'is the blade 6 of a smoothing,
scraping or: shaping member 7. The lower edge of the ymember 7 terminates in fa head liavingjthe forward end thereof upturned;
as at 8 whereby said member can be easily moved over a surface and .in some instances, the lower edge of the member 7 has a convex portion 9, which facilitates moving the member around a corner of plastic material to smooth the same, w`ithout any danger. of
vtlie material being upset bythe action of saidfmember.
' i Thebladelt of the member has afT-shaped 'slot 9 aid arranged in said slot is the head 10 of .a bolt 11, said bolt extending'l through the slot 4 to -be held therein by a winged thumb nut v12 screwed upon the outer end of said bolt. It is through the medium of .the bolt 11, the nut 12 and the slot 4 that the blade 6 of the member can be raised and 'lowered within the saddle, whereby the .lower edge of the member will be correctly These guide members have the forward and rear ends therepf upturned, as at 17 whereby the tool can be easily shifted back and As illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, ,the lower edge of a member can terminateiin a head especially designed for producing a bead, joint orl angle. For inst-ance a semicylindri cal bead, a -semicylindrical groove, a groove V-shzipcd in cross section, a dove-tailed groove or a rounded corner can be produced, and for this reason'the smoothing and sha ing member has been made detacliab e whereby a member especially designed for a certain piece of work can be used in connec-v tion with the saddle.
For brick-|ayers,tl ie guide members 16 ride upon the surface of bricks while the,
members scrape and smooth the mortar between thev bricks, in'some instances producing a groove between the bricks that imparts the desired effect to a brick wall.
' For concrete workers, the marking of blocks in a cement pavement and the round-l .y shaping einber having ,a blade extending ing -of corners can be easily accomplished into said Isaddle, means connected to said without resorting to a kit of special tools; bladeand extending through the slot in the Fromthe foregoing it is thoughtth'at'the .l frontf'wall of said. saddle for adjustably 5 utility and operation of.atoo1,;i .n accordance holding said blade whereby said member can with my invention will be apparent without be correctly .positioned relatively to the further descriptiomand while-v the draw.- lower edges of said saddle, and longitudinal ing there isjllustratedga preferredlemlzodi-V guide members connected to the lower edges* ment 'of my invention, it is to be nderstood 'ofsaid'saddle and having u turned ends. f 5
