Description

JAMES M. GARNER AND CARVER C. CLARK, OF HOL'I', ALABAMA.
BRlICKll/IASONS T0013.
Application led April 17, 1922.
To all yiii/tom. may conce/rn:
Be it known that we, JAMES M. GARNER and CARVER C. CLARK, citizens of the United States of America, residing` at Holt. in the county of Tuscaloosa and `State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in irickmasons Tools, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates'to brickmasons tool used for finishing joints in tapestry brick, cut. stone and the like.
With this tool we propose to furnish the lnickmason with a simple vet eihfcient device that will out mortar joints to any de sired depth and trowel same in one opera-- tion. The device, provided with rollers or wheels, thereby reducing friction and labor to a minimum. is designed for the interchange of cutting and troweling tools for various widths and shapes of joints as well as the feature of adjustability as to depth ot joint.
rFliese and other objects and advantages will. more fully appear as the nature of the invention is more clearly understood from the followinfi specification, the subject matter of the claim and the views illustrated in the acciompanyingv drawings. in which Figs l and 2 are respectively side eleva-- tion and top plan views of our improved hrickmason tool.
'Figa 3 and 4 illustrate some of the dit ferent tools adapted to he used with this tool.
Referring to the drawings, wherein simi-- lar reference numerals refer to similar parte throughout the several views, l denotes the U-sliaped frame of the device with an end extension socket 2 for the attachment of the handle 3 with ferrule l securing handle to said frame. lWe propose to journal the wheels 5 to the traine l by means oE the axles (5 extending' from side to sido and throue'h the 'ti-ame. l/Iidway between the axles 6 is a cross frame or brace 7 with a vertical socket 8 for the reception of shanks 9 and l0 of tools to be used in con nection with this device. The tools are secured in this socket by the set screw 11 which also permits of the raising` or lowering of said tools tor any desired. depth of .mortar joint; The' design of the tools l2 Serial No. 553,703.
and i3 shown in the drawings has on the tool l2 a scraping face 14 which gouges the mortar out of the joints to a uniform depth, while the tool 13 trowels the joint With its inclined face l5, thereby forming a smooth uniformly deep joint so desired by all builders. Tools 12n and 13l show wider types of the tools 12 and 13. their Shanks 9 and 10 being adapted to be clamped in the socket 8.
In operation, the shanks of the tools corresponding to the width of the joints desired are inserted into the socket 8 and after an adjustment as to depth are secured in said socket by the set screw 1l. The handle is grasped by the operator, and the tool is moved along` the joints both vertically and horizontally. cutting the mortar away, leaving a clean trowelled joint neatly done, and in half the time required for the use of the two tools separately.
Though we have described with great j iarticularity the details of the embodiment of the invention herein shown, it is not to be construed that we are limited thereto as changes in arrangement and substitution of equivalents may he made by those skilled.
`in the art without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention., what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Pat-ent, iszu Si. device of the character described, comprising e frame having at one end a handle` a pair of wheels mounted on each side ot' the trarnen a cross member connecting the sides of the frame substantially midway be` tween the front and rear pair of wheels, a socket on said cross member set at right angles to the trame, interchangeable mortar cutting and trowelling tools having elongated angled shanks adapted to be received in said socket1 and means to clamp said shrinks in desired adjusted position in the socket.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
JAMES M. GARNER. CARVER C, CLARK, Witness:
J; M, Kre/iene.
