Description
1,523,238 T. SAGADENCKY Filed Sept. 27 1924 Patented Jan. 13, was
entree IREFON SAGADENCKY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
roon
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Theron Sscannncnr, a citizen of the Republic of Austria, residing at Detroit, county of lVayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in implements for use in connection with masonry or concrete work, having for an object to provide a novel form of tool especially advantageous for usein the raking or scraping of mortar joints in masonry to a uniform depth, thereby lending to the ap pearance of a completed structure, as well as to the stability of the same.
It is likewise an object to provide a tool of the character mentioned wherein an adjustable raking or scraping element is enrployed, thus permitting mortar joints to be raked or finished at different depths according to the design of brick or other building blocks used or to the desires of a worker.
Other objects of the invention willbe in part obvious, and in part pointed out hereinafter.
Inorder that the invention and its mode of operation anduse may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawing, and in the detailed following description based thereupon set out one embodiment of the same.
In these drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved tool showing the same in use'for scraping mortar between the joints of bricks or other building blocks, the latter being shown in section;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the improved device;
Figure 3 is a front end elevation of the same; and,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sec tion taken on the line of Figure 3 looking in the direction in which the arrows point.
Having more particular reference to the drawings. in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, the invention may be stated to comprise a substantially rectangularly shaped body portion 1 formed of suitable material. such as aluminum, or other light metal possessing the desired and necessary strength. the outer side of which body portion formed with handle 2, while one side wall thereof is angularly offset, or is formed with a right angularly disposed bend or elbow the purpose of which will be presently apparent.
An opening or socket is formed in that side wall of the body portion 1 having the elbow 3 formed therein, such opening being disposed parallel to and longitudinally of said side wall of the body portion 1 and opening onto that part of the same adjacent the elbow 3 as is clearly shown inthe Figures 1 and 2.
In this connection. it is to be noted'that the outer side of the body portion 1 is formed with a flattened straight-edge surface 4 whereby the same will flushly contact with the outer or exposed faces of brick or other buildingblocks in connection with which the tool is to be used; permitting the same to be readily drawn thereover in usage and at the same time, to provide an effectual depth regulating gauge for the scraping or raking element hereinafter more fully described.
The cylindrical shank Sis adapted to be snugly received in the opening formed in that side wall of the body portion 1 having: the elbow 3 therein and. as will be noted. is formed with a right angularlv off-set portion 5 carrying; a tapered. raking or scraping head 6 thereon. this head being substanti ally square in cross section and having the outer surface thereof formed plane and with straight edges about the same for an obvious purpose. The size of the tapered raking head 6 is such as to permit of its ready engagement between uvtaposed bricks or other building blocks such as indicated herein by the reference letter B. such bricks or building blocks being; joined or bonded through the medium of a suitable plastic composition, such as mortar m. To effect firm and secure positioning of the raking head carrying shank 5 with respect to the body 1 of the tool, a locking screw 7 is adapted to be engaged in a screw threaded opening formed therein adjacent the elbow 3 in order that the inner end of the same may be bindingly engaged with an adjacent portion of said shank 5. In this way, it is manifest that the shank 5 with its right angularly off-set portion 5 and the raking head 6 will be securely locked in an adjusted position with respect to the flattened and straight edged portions of the body 1 and ac cordingly, will effect the raking or scraping of the mortar jointure in an even manner and at a uniform depth throughout.
Because of the right angularly off-set portion .5 of the shank 5, it will be understood that the raking head 6 will be off-set with respect to that end of the body 1 of the 'tool. carrying the same and in consequence, will be permitted to reach into mortar joints between bricks or building blocks adjacent ledges or shoulders, such as indicated in the Figure 1 without liability of causing the hand of a user to strike against the same and become out 01' abrased there by, the off-setting of such portion 5 being sufficient to bring about a spacing of that end or side wall of the body 1 carrying the same inwardly or beyond the ledge for a distance sufficient by the same.
In using the improved tool, the shank 5 is adjusted to the desired position in its to give ample clearance .socket opening onto the elbow 3 of the aforesaid side wall of the body 1 whereupon the locking screw '7 is turned to its locking or securing position. The flattened straightedged portion 4 of the tool is now fiushly engaged with the smooth or outer surface of the brick or building block in the manner indicated in the Figure l and the raking or scraping element 6 is engaged between the bricks or building blocks and with the outer surface of face of the mortar forming the,
bonding or tying means between such bricks or building blocks. lVith the flattened straight edged portion 4 flushly engaged with the outer or exposed surface of the -bricks or building blocks,the user when my handv 1. A tool of the "character described com-"- prising a body portion having a flattened straight edge formed on-one side thereof, another of the sides of said body portion being formed with an elbow and with alongitudinally disposed socket, opening onto said elbow, a shank adjustably received in said socket, and a raking head on the free end of the shank. V v
2. A tool of the character described comprising a substantially rectangularly shaped body portion, one sidewall of said body portion being flattened and formed with a straight edge, another of the side walls of said body portion being formed with an elbow and with a longitudinally disposed socket opening onto said elbow, a handle on the outer side of said body portion, a shank adjustably received within said socket, and p a raking head carried on the free end of said shank. A tool of the character describedcomprising a substantially rectangularly shaped 1 body portion, oneside of said body portion being flattened and formed with a straight edge, another of the sides of said body por tion being formed with an elbow and with a longitudinally disposed socket opening onto said elbow, a handle on the outer side of said body portion, a shank adjustably received within said socket and having one portion-of the same off-set and extended outwardly from the adjacent-side of said body portion, and a raking head carried on the free end of SI-lCl shank.
