ToaZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JASPER BLACKBURN, a citizen of the United States, and residentof Kirkwood, St. Louis county, MlSSOllIl, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guy-Clamps, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference be ng had to the accompanying drawings, formlng a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in guy clamps, and the object of my lnvention is to construct a clamp of the type having a wedge-shape block arranged to be embraced by a loop in a cable and a member having converging walls adapted to embrace the wedge-shape block and the loop of the cable 'with a means whereby the wedge-shape block and the loop may be moved lengthwise relatively to the other member of the clamp and held in a osition to permit of a movement of the cab e around the wedge-shape block.
With the above purposes in view my 111- vention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts described, pointed out in the claims and il ustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a clampconstructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1 of the opposite face of the clamp; Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional elevation taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional plan taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 1s a view similar to Fig. 3 and illustrates a modified form of clam in Which the pin is wedge-shape as require to? draw the wedge-shape block; and Fig. 6 isa view similar, to Fig. 5 showing the wed e-shape block and the pin 1n positions be ore drawing the wedge-shape block in a position to release the cable.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: 1 designates thebody portion of the clamp proper at the lower end of which there is formed an integral hook 2 to which may be attached the anchor guy, not shown.
At the end of the bod portion 1 opposed to the end carryin the book 2 are the convergin walls 3 an 4: which extend laterally from t e body portion 1 and are connected at their outer ends by the integral wall 5, the wall 5 being arran ed in opposition to the body portion 1 whic forms the rear wall of an open-ended socket.
Adjacent the base of the forward wall 5 of the socket there is a marginal, semi-circular cut-away portion 6 and in the body portion 1 there is a slot 7 paralleling the longitudinal axis of the socket, its uppermost end being opposite the central or deepest portion of the marginal cut-away 6 in the wall 5.
8 designates a wedge-shape block whose larger end is semi-circular and whose margin is concave to embrace the loop of a cable.-
As shown in Fig. 4 the walls 3 and 4 of the socket are concave to oppose the concaved margins of the wedge-shape block. Formed transversely through the body of the block 8 there is an opening 9, and carried by the block and preferably formed integrally therewith is a lug 10 which is arranged for travel in the slot 7 in the body portion 1 of the clamp proper.
11 designates 'a pin which is inserted through the opening 9 in the body portion of the wedge-shape block and which bears against the end of the slot 7 in the body portion of the clamp proper and the central portion of the cut-away 6 in the front wall of the socket of the clamp proper in order to keep the wedge-shape block in a position with its margins removed from the walls of the socket so that the cable may be free to move between the Walls of the socket and the Wedge-shape block.
In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the pin 12 tapers from end to end and the opening in the wedge-shape block is elongated to receive the larger end of the tapering pin 12.
By the means shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the tapering pin 12 may be driven to draw the wedge-shape block in position to free the cable.
In order that there be a uniform gripping of the cable on each side of the socket and the wedge-shape block it is necessary that the wedge-shape block be maintained approximately parallel with the socket, hence the pz rovision of the guiding lug 10 and the slot The tapering pin 12 is provided with a plurality of perforations 13 in order to receive split pins 1 1 or the like to prevent movements of the pin 12 relative the clamp ing members. If such means as the perforations and split pins were not used and the cable was being moved relative the clamping members there would be a tendency for the pin 12 to be drawn outwardly due to its tapering shape.
I claim:
1. In a guy clamp, the combination with a socket having an integral anchor hook, and transversely alining pin seats, one of the seats being a marginal depression in one wall of the socket and the other seat being a slot in the opposite wall of the socket and extended lengthwise of the socket, of a wedge-shape block arranged to be embraced by said socket and adapted to be inclos'ed in a loop in a cable, there being an opening formed through said block, of a pin arranged to be inserted through said opening and held in place by engagement with said seats to retain the wedge-shape block in a non-clamping position relative to the socket, and a guide carried by the block and traversing the slot to hold the blockin alinement with the socket.
2. In a guy clamp, the combination with a wedge-shape block and a socket to embrace the block, each having openings therethrough, of a tapering pin arranged to be extended through the openings in the block and socket, and means carried by the'tapering pin to hold it in place in the block and socket, substantially as shown and for the purposes stated.
