GUSTAVE J. JAGGARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR MUSIC-BOXES.
fiPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,024, dated September 25, 1888.
Application filed December 31, 18247. Serial No. 259,469. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE J. Jnconnn, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety Device for Music-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure lis an end elevation showing my new safety device and the frame in which it is held, and Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the safety device applied to the spring-barrel of a musicbox.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
A train of multiplying-gearing, B, connects the large gear-whee1 C on the shaft D to the short shaft E. This shaft is journaled in a frame, H, and is provided at one end with a pinion, a, to connect with the gearing B. To the outer end ofthe shaft E is secured the headpiece E, to one end of which is pivoted the fan F.
To the opposite end of the head-piece is so cured one end of the small coiled spring G, the opposite end of which is connected to the fan F, so that said spring normally holds the fan closed, or drawn inward as far as it will go, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. The frame His provided with the stop arms or pins J,arranged for the fan F to strike, as shown in dottedlines in Fig. 1, in case the speed of the shaft E should be such as to cause the impact of the air upon the fan to turn the fan uponits pivot. The inner edge of the fan is provided with a projection, f, which acts as a stop to the outward movement of the fan, so that when the fan strikes one or the other of the pins J the shaft E will be locked, and through it thegearing B, wheel 0, and the spring contained in the barrel D.
By constructing the safety device in this manner the same may be made very light, it is caused to act by ainpressure, and is very effective and-reliable for its purpose.
Having thus described my inventioml claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A safety device for music-boxes, consisting ofa shaft, a fan pivoted thereto, a coiled spring for holding the fan closed, and suitable stops for the fan to strike, substantially as described.
2. The shaft E, connected to a train of gearing and provided with the head-piece E, in combination with the fan F, spring G, stops J,
and the projection f for locking the fan, substantiall y as described.
