* NICE-1 if r rnorn'rztnve MEANS. I
T 0 all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, IVALLER C. PAnRIsrI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented;. certain new and useful Improvementsin Propelling' Means, of which the following. is a specification, reference being had to the accompany-.-
ing drawings. a
This invention relates to certain improvements in propelling means, and has relation more particularly to a means of this general character especially designed and'adapted for use in connection with toys, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including two rotatable members, suchas axles, and with wlnch an elastic bandor strip coacts, together with means whereby the band as it unwinds from one of the rotatable members is caused to wind around the second rotatable member.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved propelling means whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating a device constructed in accordance with the present embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the device as disclosed in Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a body with which is operatively engaged the rotatable shafts A and B, the shaft A being arranged at the front of the portion of the body C and the shaft B at the rear portion of said body. As herein disclosed, the extremities of the shafts A and B, have affixed thereto the wheels WV, although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself in this respect, as other members may be fixed to the shafts A and in Specification'of Letters fatent. Patented J 15 29, 1919,
Application filed January 11, I919. Serial N 0. 270,655.
D to which is suitably secured an end portion of an elastic band or'strip E, and whichband is adapted to be wound around the drum to place said bandor strip E under tension as the opposite 'end portion of the band .orstrip E is suitably secured tofthe front axle A. The band or strip E is also adapted to wind around the front axle A but reverse to thewindings around the drum D.
M denotes a non-elastics flexible member or band secured *atone'endportion to the front .axle A, and-at its oppositeend to the rear axle.B,;-and said member or band M upon travel ofthe device causes the axles A and -B-to rotate in unison as the. windings of the strip or band E around the shaft B are reverse to the windings of the hand or stripE around the drum D, and the windings of the member or band M around the front axle A is also reverse to the windings oflthe band or strip E around said front ax e.
Initially, the rear shaft B is rotated to wind the band or strip E around the drum D whereby said strip or band is Placed under tension. At the same time, the unwinding of the member or strip E from the front shaft A causes the member or band M to wind around said front shaft. The tension of the band or strip E causes the drum D to rotate, resulting in the requisite rotation of the shaft B and which rotation of the shaft B results in the member or band M being wound therearound to rotate the front shaft A. The rotation of the shaft A re sults in the winding therearound of the band or strip E so that the tension or pulling' power of said band or strip E .is maintained as the winding thereof around the front axle A prevents the band or strip E from becoming slack.
To rewind the device it is only necessary to pull the member or band M forwardly, as this operation will cause the elastic band or strip E to wind back on the drum D.
In the present embodiment of my invention, the wheels W carried by the rear axle B are each of a diameter substantially four times the diameter of the drum D, and as the elastic band or strip E will stretch substantially five times its normal length, it will be at once self evident that the body B will be caused to travel a distance substantially equal to twenty times the length of the band or strip E, and which is further assured in view of the fact that the energy of the band or strip E is released uniformly due to the coaction of the member or band M With the axles A and B1 From the foregoing description, it is, thought to be obvious that a propelling meansvconstructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With which it may be assembled and operated}, and it will also be obvious: that my in-- ventionis susceptible of some change and; modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do: not WlSh to be understood as: limiting; myself to theprecise arrangement and formation oi the several parts. hereinshown in: carrying out my invention in practice. except asfherei'naiiter claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A propelling means ot the class de-' scribed eomprising' two spacedimembers sup-- ported for-rotation, an elastic band connect-v 1ngsaid members and Winding thereanound',
and a non-elastic flexible member connecttension rotating one of said members, and
means coactings with the members for causing the same to rotate.- in. unison. upon rotation 0t one oi the members the tension. of theela-stic band,v whereby the elastic band iseausedi to; Wind; around; the second member for-maintaining the tension of the elas- ,l'rlQ-"bfllld.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiixmy signature in the: presence of two, Witnesses.
