To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE B. HANS- BUnG and ELiAs M. LYoNs, both citizens of the United States of America, the former residing at New York city, Bronx county, State of New York, and the latter residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Bropelled heeled Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in toys, the object being to provide an inexpensive self-propelled wheeled toy. To carry our invention into practice, we provide a body member, to represent an automobile for instance, having a propeller to force same along the ground or floor, suitable means being provided to operate the propeller and special means to lock same while its operating` mechanism is being wound up or placed under tension.
We will now proceed to describe our invention in detail, the novel features of which will be pointed ont in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein h Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an embodiment of our invention;

Our invention consists of a body 5 having front wheels 6 and rear wheels 7. As the object of our invention is to produce a selfpropelled wheeled-toy, we'provide the body 5, at the rear thereof, with a propeller ,8 carried by a spindle 9 rotatably mounted in a bearing block 10. The inner end of the spindle 9 is provided with a hook 10 to engage an adjacent end of an elastic member 12 adapted to be twisted to place same under torsional tension.
The front end of the body 5 carries a crank or winding spindle 13 rotatably sup-V ported by a bearing-block 14. The inner end of the spindle 13 carries a hook 15 to engage the adjacent end of the member 12. The elastic member 12 will be placed under a torsional tension by turning the spindle or crank 13. During the winding or twisting of the member 12, we prefer to hold the propeller against rotation. To accomplish this result, we provide a pivoted post 16 having a wheel 17 to resemble the steering post and wheel of a motor-vehicle. The post 16 is pivotally supported by a bar 18 carried by the body 5. The lower end of post 16 has connected thereto a rod 19 extending rearwardly through the back end of the body 5 and also forwardly through the front thereof. The rod 19 carries an eye 20 through which a pin 21 loosely passes. The eye 2O is located within a slot 22 in the lower end of post 16. v
Before winding or twisting member 12, the post 16 will be moved forwardly (see full line position, Fig. l), which movement will move rod 19 rearwardly, causing the end 23 to extend into the path of rotation of the propeller 8; hence the propeller will be held against rotation during the twisting of member 12. After member 12 has been wound up, post 16 will he moved .rearwardly, (see dotted lineposition Fig. 1), causing end 24 of the rod 19 to extend into the path of rotation of the crank 13. When the post 16 has been moved to release the propeller and to lock the crank or spindle 13 the propeller will rotate rapidly and force the toy ahead.
Having described our invention, what we claim is 1. In a toy, a`movable body member, a propeller to move same, an elastic element to operate the propeller, means to wind up the elastic element, and a lock mechanism to prevent the rotation of the propeller during the winding up of the elastic element, and to lock the elastic winding means after the propeller has been released, said lock mechanism comprising a rod movable into the path of rotation ofthe propeller and of the elastic winding means.
2. In a toy, a body member, wheels carried thereby, a propeller, an elastic element to operate the propeller, a crank to wind up the elastic element and place it under torsional tension, a rod movable longitudinally of the body into the path of rotation of the crank and the propeller, and means to move the rod to'oppose the rotation of the propeller or to oppose the rotation of the crank.
