UNITED STATES PATiEN'r rrrcn,
RUFUS Y. KIRKLAND, OF VVOODHAVEN, AND JOHN REED, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SINK CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,880, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed February 15, 1888. Serial No. 264.152. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it know n that we, RUFUS Y. KIRKLAND and Joan Rum), citizens of the United States. residing at Voodhaven, in the county of Queens and State of New York, and New York city, in the county and State of New York, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sink-Cleaners; and we do declare the following to bea full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtaius to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference :5 marked thcrcon, which form apart ofthis specification.
Our-invention consists of a combined scraper for collecting the refuse in the sink and a perforated shovel for removing the refuse, and
the improved means for securing the scraper to the shovel-handle, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a face 2 view of our complete sink-cleaner. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged face view of the blank for the scraper portion as before bending to secure the scraper. Fig. 4 is an end view of the scraper. The complete sink cleaner consists of scraper part a, handle I), and perforated shovel 0, made of a blank stamped in one piece out of sheet metal, and a strip of rubber, 11 orany suitable material secured in the upper end of the handle and forming scraper part a. The mebllic blank is first stamped out with its scraperholding part in the form represented in Fig. 3, with the lateral projections indieated in dotted lines (1, and with the punched 0 holes (2, also with the perforations g in the shovel c. The blank is then folded back and forward on the lines f, as indicated in Fig. 2, with the rubber or other equivalent scraper inserted in the last fold, which, being tightly 5 pressed together, secures the rubber in the scrapcrshank. The perforations shown in center fold of Fig. 3 are intended for more effectually securing the rubber without any other fastening for the rubber, as when the metal is folded down upon the rubber it will be compressed around and made to swell into the perforations. and thus be securely fastened without any rivets or pins, and the method of fasteniug will be entirely hidden in the folding of the metal. To make the ends of the scraperholding part more secure, we also stamp the blank out with the wings or lateral projections 12, (shown in Fig. 3,) and fold them to the back of the rubber or scraper, as shown in Fig. 4.
In use the scraper a will be used for scrap ing together the solid refuse which will not pass through the sieve into the wastepipe of the sink, and the shovel part c for removing the said refuse from the sink, the perforations 6 5 of the shovel allowing the water to drain away from the solid portion of the refuse, which, being thus separated from the water. may be thrown into the tire and burned, or be otherwise more favorably disposed of than withoutsepa- 7o ration.
What we claim, and desire to seen re by Letters Patent, is
1. Asink-clcancr having thescraper-rubher h secured by compression in the folds of the scraper-shank, thcsaid folded part of the shank having the perforations c to receive the pertions of the impcrforate rubber forced into them by the compression of the fold of the shank, substantially as described.
2. Ina sink-cleaner having the scraper-rubher 71 secured in the folds of the scraper-shank, the combination, with said rubber and the main fold of the shank turned over the edge of the rubber, of the lateral projections d, 8 folded around the ends of the rubber and the ends of said main fold, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
RUFUS Y. KIRKLAND. JOHN REED.
