HOMER B. CAMPBELL AND JAMES SHAW, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNORS TO THE SHAW MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROLLERuBLOTTER.,
SPECIFICATION forming part o Letters Patent No. 387,968, dated August 14.-, 1888.
Application filed April 17, 1898. Serial No. 270.902. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, HoMER B. CAMPBELL and JAMES SHAW, both of Racine, in the county of Racine, and inthe State of VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Im proveinents in Roller-Blotters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to blotting-pads, and will be folly described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan View of a letter-sheet holder with our invention in place thereon; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail View of a medication.
A is the sheet-liolder,which may be of any desired form, and B are blocks that are secured to the front corners of the letter-sheet holder, and which are hollowed out to form a housing, a, fora spiral spring, C, one end of which is secured to the blocks, as at l), and the other to an end plate, D, ot" a franie,wl1ich consists of two plates, D, connected by bars E E, and each foriningabcaring forone of thejournais ot'a roller, F, which is suitably padded and covered with bibulouspaper. Thesprings C are secured to the plates D by being hooked in perforations therein, and preferably the connection is made easily detachable; but we do not mean to confine ourselves to the incre details of construction or to the use of the letter-sheet holder shown, as the blocks may be made in thev forni shown in Fig. 3 and attached directly to a desk or table; or desks or tables may be formed with wells and the springs may be anchored in these wells; or the springs may be anchored directly to the tops of desks or tables. Elastic bands or cords may also be used instead of the spiral springs.
When not in use, the pad and its frame are held in the position shown in Fig. Z-that is, with their ends resting each upon the top of a block, Bby the springs C, and hence out of the Way; but when it is to be used the bars are grasped and the frame isdrawn toward the opv erator, and the pad is rolled over the written surface, after which, on it being released, the springs will draw it back over the sheet and up the inclined surfaces of the blocks into the position shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a suitable support, of springs secured at one end to said support, and a frame carrying a roller blottingpad secured to the other end of said springs, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with hollow blocks, of spiralsprings secured therein at one end, and a frame carrying a roller blottingpad secured to the other end of said springs, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Vvisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
HOMER B. CAMPBELL. JAMES SHAW.
