2 Claims,3 Drawing Figures 1 COLLAR STAY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION When shirts or dresses are packed in luggage for traveling purposes, the shirts or dresses including the collars thereof become compressed and wrinkled, which is evident upon removal either for immediate use or hanging in closets. When shirts or dresses are hung on hangers, and especially when rather closely packed on a hanging rod, the collars become compressed and are subject to creasing from close packing. While some wrinkling of shirts or dresses may be acceptable, it is the collars which are most noticeable and it is therefore an object of this invention to provide a means for preserving dress or shirt collars from wrinkling and creasing under conditions where collars would be subject to wrinkling and creasing.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION oretical vertical plane, the notch in the horizontally oriented upper edge having a depth substantially greater than the notch in the horizontally oriented lower edge, one flat surface of the material being coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive material, and a removable backing material covering the pressure sensitive adhesive material.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a top view of the stay according to'the invention,
FIG. 2 is a side view along lines 2-2 of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is a view showing the collar stay as applied to a shirt collar.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring to FIG. 1, the collar stay of the invention comprises a stiff yieldably flexible flat substantially H- shaped material 1 having vertically oriented opposite side edges 2 and 3, horizontally oriented upper edge 4 and horizontally oriented lower edge 5. The material is provided with a notch 6 in the upper edge 4 and with a notch 7 in the lower edge 5. The notches 6 and 7 are located in a common theoretical vertical plane 8. It is evident from FIG. 1 that the notch 6 in the upper edge 4 is of substantially greater depth than notch 7 in lower edge 5.
FIG. 2 is a side view along lines 2--2 of FIG. 1. One flat surface 9 of the strip 1 is coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive layer 10, which may be of the type commonly used on transparent pressure sensitive cellophane tapes. While the adhesive coating may be applied by brushing, rolling, etc., a common available type having pressure sensitive adhesive on both sides, of the type used in mounting a picture in picture albums, may be used in lieu of brushing orrolling the adhesive on the flat surface 9. The pressure sensitive adhesive layer 10 is protected by a readily removable backing sheet 11, as illustrated in FIG. 2, and which may be composed, for example, of waxed paper.
FIG. 3 more particularly illustrates the collar stay of the invention as applied to a shirt collar 12. In applying the collar stay, it is first manually removed from the backing sheet 11, thereby exposing the adhesive layer, and is mounted on the shirt front with the lower notch 7 engaging an upper shirt button 13 and with the pressure sensitive legs 14 and 15 formed by upper notch 6 applied to the underside of collar lapels l6 and 17, respectively. Since the collar stay is mounted and secured both to button 13 and lapels l6 and 17 by means of the adhesive layer 10, the collar stay is prevented from accidental dislodgement, while the adhesively secured layer is so secured to the lapels themselves to maintain the shirt collar in wrinkle-proof condition.
Various modifications of the invention are contemplated within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A collar stay in the form ofa stiff yieldably flexible flat substantially I-I-shaped material having vertically oriented opposite side edges and horizontally oriented upper and lower edges, the upper and lower edges each having a V-shaped notch therein centrally between the opposite side edges of the material and located in a common theoretical vertical plane, the notch in the horizontally oriented upper edge having a depth substantially greater than the notch in the horizontally oriented lower edge, one flat surface of the material being coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive material, and a removable backing material covering the pressure sensitive adhesive material.
2. The combination of a shirt collar and collar stay comprising a shirt collar including a shirt front adjacent the shirt collar, the shirt collar being formed of a pair of spaced collar lapels, a collar stay in the form a stiff yieldably flexible flat substantially I-I-shaped material having vertically oriented opposite side edges and horizontally oriented upper and lower edges, the upper and lower edges each having a V-shaped notch therein centrally between the opposite side edges of the material and located in a common theoretical vertical plane, the notch in the upper edge having a depth substantially greater than the notch in the lower edge and thereby forming an upper pair of legs, one flat surface of the materialincluding the legs being coated with a pressure sensitive material, the lower portion of the material including the lower notch being mounted on the shirt front with the pressure sensitive legs engaging the undersides of the lapels.
