IQD. TISS 0 R. 2 m .1 9 m w v 5 5 m 3 May 12, 1970 IRVING DAVID TISS ATTORNEY United States Patent M 3,510,920 GARMENT DRAPING BUTION Irving David Tiss, 2 Archbridge Lane, Springfield, NJ. 07081 Filed Mar. 5, 1968, Ser. No. 710,580 Int. Cl. A44b 1/18 US. Cl. 24-90 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention deals with a garment draping button comprising a substantially flat and substantially stilt but yieldable sheet material carrying a tongue thereon, the tongue comprising a neck portion carrying a head at one end portion thereof with the other end portion being connected to the sheet, a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive material on one side of the sheet and a protective readily removable backing material covering the adhesive layer.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION When a button type garment such as a mans jacket is hung on a hanger during non-use, it is usually advantageously buttoned-up to prevent it from dislodgement from the hanger, or to prevent the garment from shifting on the hanger and assuming an undesirable hanging position. When so buttoned-up on the hanger, the garment lapels, in the case of a mans jacket, tend to roll" and the front of the garment tends to billow. Thus, the garment does not hang straight and smooth and upon subsequent use the garment does not have a desirable pressed appearance.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the invention, there is provided a temporary readily applicable and readily removable garment draping button which, when applied, for the hanging of a garment, adjusts the hanging drape of the garment by increasing the overlap of the button-carrying portion and the button hole portions of the garment. This increase in over-lap during hanging removes the tendency of the garment front from billowing and the lapels from rolling by providing a desirable draping tension to the lapels during hanging.
The garment draping button, in its preferred form, comprises a substantially flat and substantially stiff but yieldable sheet material with a portion thereof having a slot formed therethrough, the slot being contoured to form a tongue bendable out of the plane of the sheet, the tongue comprising a neck portion carrying a head at one end portion thereof with the other end portion being integrally connected to the sheet, a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive material on one side of the sheet, and a protective readily removable backing material covering the adhesive layer.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 illustrates a top view of the garment draping button of the invention,
FIG. 2 illustrates a bottom view of the garment draping button,
FIG. 3 illustrates a side view along lines 33 of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 4 illustrates the side view illustrated by FIG. 3
Patented May 12, 1970 DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS In accordance with the figures, the invention comprises a substantially flat and substantially stiff sheet 1 composed I of any suitable material such as pasteboard, resin, metal,
etc. and of any suitable shape, e.-g., rectangular, circular, etc. The sheet material is slotted with a slot 2 formed through a portion of the sheet and contoured to form a tongue 3 bendable out of the plane of the sheet 1. The tongue formed by the slot contour comprises a neck 4 carrying a head 5, on one end preferably simulating the shape of a disc or button of greater diameter than the width of neck 4, with the head being free for movement out of the plane of the sheet and the other end of the neck 4 being connected to the sheet, e.g. integrally connected to the sheet. Preferably, the top surface of the head 5 is provided with markings 6 denoting a button face. While the tongue 3 is illustrated as being formed along one side portion of the sheet 1, it may also be formed centrally of the sheet.
Regarding FIGS. 2 and 3, the bottom surface of the sheet is coated with a layer 7 of pressure sensitive adhesive which may be of the type commonly used on transparent pressure sensitive cellophane tapes. While the adhesive may be applied by brushing, rolling, etc., a common available type having pressure sensitive adhesive on both sides, of the type used in mounting pictures in picture albums, may be used in lieu of brushing or rolling the adhesive on the button surface of the sheet. The pressure sensitive layer 7 is protected prior to use by a readily removable backing material, 8, such as waxed paper covering the adhesive layer. Preferably, the bottom surface of the tongue 5 is free of the adhesive 8, as illustrated by FIG. 2.
In application to the garment which is hung on a hanger, the head 5 is bent upwardly out of the plane of the sheet 1 and the backing material is removed from the adhesive on the bottom surface of the sheet. The exposed adhesive layer 7 is then pressed against the button-carrying portion of the garment at a position spaced laterally of a button on the garment and at a location engageable with a button hole on the button hole carrying portion of the garment and thus the garment draping button is pressure adhesively retained thereon. The button hole of the garment is then engaged with the head 5 and so buttoned at an increased overlap of the garment comparable with the normal overlap when buttoned by means of the garment button.
The increased overlap removes the tendency of the garment front from billowing and the lapels from rolling by providing a desirable draping tension to the lapels during hanging.
What is claimed is:
1. A garment draping button comprising a substantially Hat and substantially stiff but yieldable sheet material, a portion of the sheet having a slot formed therethrough, the slot being contoured to form a tongue bendable out of the plane of the sheet, the tongue comprising a neck portion carrying a head at one end portion thereof with the other end portion being connected to the sheet, a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive material on one side of the sheet, and a protective readily removable backing material covering the adhesive layer.
2. A garment draping button according to claim 1, wherein the head is free of adhesive material.
3. A garment draping button according to claim 1, wherein the said sheet is a substantially rectangular sheet, the said slot being formed along one marginal side portion of the sheet.
4. A garment draping button according to claim 1, wherein one surface of the sheet is provided with markings denoting a button face.
5. A garment draping button according to claim 1, wherein the head is substantially in the form of a disc.
