UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,665,074 4/1928 Shepard 2/279 2 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures 1 TOWEL ATTACHMENT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a toweling attachment for a garment, which permits easy and unhindered accessibility to the towel for quick release from, and reattachment to, the garment when the physical state of the user requires its use.
The invention becomes particularly important to participants of outdoor summer sports, such as tennis, where the player moves around constantly causing him to perspire heavily.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention provides a quick release attachment means for toweling andthe like which comprises a receiver means provided with a plurality of flexible loops adapted to be affixed to an article of clothing, a piece of toweling and, gripping means provided with a plurality of hooks affixed to said toweling and adapted to be attached to said flexible loops of said receiver strips by manual-pressure only and to be disengaged from said receiver strip under a manual pulling action only.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawing, FIG. 1 is a front view of the towel at- DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In FIGS. 1 and 5, the towel 12 is shown in place attached at 14 to the upper portion of shorts 16. The attaching means, consist, according to the invention, of two sturdy tapes or strips, one of which is securely affixed to the towel, and has affixed thereto small flexible hooks (e.g., made of plastic) engaging with and gripping into a second strip, fastened to the shorts. The second strip comprises a receiving matting formed of a plurality of small closed loops of thread.
In FIGS. 2 and 6, 18 indicates a backing for the said receiving matting and 19 indicates the loops provided thereon. The backing of the matting 18 is affixed onto the shorts, for example, by way of heat sealing or by being sewn thereon.
In FIGS. 3 and 4, the backing of a gripping means 20 is designated by the numeral 23, the gripping means being securely affixed by sewing or other means preferably to one end of the towel 12.
The tennis player, in our illustrative example, attaches the towel 12 to the back of the shorts 16, by use of slight pressure, and thereby causes the hooks 21 of the gripping means 20 to become securely entangled with the closed loops 19 of the receiving means 18. When the player wishes to use the towel, he merely pulls off the towel 12 thereby peeling the two tapes or strips 18, 20 apart. In this operation, the flexible hooks 21 of tape 20 bend open and are released from the closed loops 19 and the towel thus is disengaged from the garment.
After having used the towel 12, the player may reattach the towel to the garment by means of the abovedescribed attaching means.
Inthe case of a tennis player, the attaching area 14 is situated so as to cause the towel to hang from the lefthand side back of the belt area of the shorts, taking into consideration that the users right hand is holding onto the tennis racket. In other cases, of course, the attaching means may be situated differently, depending on the circumstances of the uses of the invention.
In order to reduce the size of the towel 12, so that it will not interfere with the free movement of the player, it is folded inwardly along lines 22 and a portion of the thusly overlapping portions of the towel, are securely fastened to the correspondingly underlying towel portions by means of gripping tape or strip 20, as by being sewn thereto and thereby preventing the towel from unfolding.
Thus, the gripping strip has a dual function, not only to be utilized as a means for quick attachment and release to a receiving strip 18, but as a means for holding the fold of a towel for the reasons above-mentioned.
The invention is obviously not limited to any sport or activity, but may be applied to any activity where there is a need for quick accessibility to and quick release of toweling. It is also to be noted that the gripping and receiving means may be reversed without altering the quick attachment and releasability described above. However, the specific arrangement shown in FIGS. 1-6 of the drawing is the preferred arrangement. Other modifications of this invention may be employed by those skilled in the art. For this reason, I wish to be bound only by the scope of the claims, which follow.
'I claim:
1. A quick release attachment means for toweling and the like which comprises in combination:
a receiver means provided with a plurality of flexible loops adapted to be affixed to an article of clothing;
a piece of folded toweling; and
gripping means provided with a plurality of hooks affixed to said toweling and adapted to be attached to said flexible loops of said receiver strips by manual pressure only and to be disengaged from said receiver strip under a manual pulling action only, the backing of said gripping means being integrally affixed to the folded portions of said piece of toweling underlying said gripping means.
2. The quick release attachment means of claim 1 wherein said receiver means has a backing thereon adapted to be heat sealed to said article of clothing.
