No. 806,852 1 Claim. (61. 2516-46) The present invention relates to the packaging of ladies stockings and especially nylon and silk stockings.

The object of the invention is to provide packaging for stockings of pleasing appearance and enabling stockings to be satisfactorily exhibited and identified whilst a-voiding undue expense.

Most ladies stockings are packaged for retail sale in transparent bags or envelopes unually made of cellophane or the like material which are sometime called and which will hereinafter be referred to as cellobags, the term celloba being understood to mean a relatively flat bag or envelope made of transparent material. The cellobags usually bear printed matter relating to the stockings contained therein so that differently printed bags are obtained for the different styles of stockings.

A stocking package according to the present invention comprises a cellobag and an insert which is folded to form two interhinged sheets each somewhat smaller but at least one of which is not greatly smaller in length and width than the cellobag, at least one and preferably both sheets bearing on its or their outer face or faces printed matter relating to the stockings contained in or to be contained in the package.

A further feature of the invention resides in a package as set forth above with stockings wholly or largely contained between said interhinged sheets and with a portion of a stocking exhibited through an opening in one of the sheets or displayed between the outer face of one of the sheets and one of the faces of the cellobag.

If desired a package according to the present invention may comprise a third insert sheet lying between the two interhinged sheets and around which the stockings are Wholly or largely folded.

The packaging according to the present invention enables one design of cellobag to be used for a variety of different styles of stocking, each style being identified by printing on the outer faces of the insert and, if desired, by labels stuck on to the exterior of the cellobag. Such labels may be used for sealing to rear face of the cellobag a closure flap extending from the front face. The same cellobags with or without printed matter thereon, may thus be commonly used with differently printed inserts for difierent styles of stockings.

The present invention may be used for a series of stocking styles named for example after different towns and States of the United States of America, the name of the town or State and a picture illustrating the nature of the town or State being printed on one outer face of the insert directed through the front face of the cellobag.

The invention is further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:

FIG. 1 illustrates the front of one form of package;

FIG. 2 illustrates the rear of the package of FIG. 1.;

FIG. 3 is a side view illustrating the insert with the stockings folded therebetween;

FIG. 4 is a sectional side view of the complete pacage; and

FIGS. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are views corresponding to FIGS. 1, 2, 3 and 4 illustrating a second form of package.

FIGS. 9 and illustrate the two parts of a box which may be used in conjunction with the packages of the present invention.

The package according to FIGURES 1 to 4 comprises a cellobag 1 of which the front face is illustrated in FIG. 1 and the rear face in FIG. 2. The cellobag has a closure 3,063,554 Patented Nov. 13, 1962 flap 3 extending from the front face thereof and the edges of which are sealed down on the rear face by small adhesive labels 4, 5. 6, 7 of golden appearance. The cellobag 1 contains a folded insert comprising two interhinged sheets 8, 9, the outer faces of the front sheet 8 and rear sheet 9 bearing printed matter as illustrated in FIGURES 1 and 2. The stocking 10 is largely contained in a folded condition between the sheets 8, 9 but the foot of one of the stockings is folded over the end of the sheet 9 and displayed between the outer face of sheet 9 and the inner surface of the rear face of the cellobag 1 to display the toe and heel.

The package according to FIGS. 5 to 8 is similar in principle to that of FIGS. 1 to 4 except that the rear sheet 13 of the interhinged

12, 13 has an oval aperture 14 therein through which a stocking folded on a third insert sheet 15 can be displayed. In the arrangement of FIGS. 5 to 8 the insert sheet 15 is not essential since the stockings could be folded upon themselves and inserted between the

sheets

12, 13 and displayed through the oval opening 14. On the other hand a third insert sheet 15 could likewise be used in conjunction with the package of FIGS. 1 to 4.

The package according to FIGS. 5 to 8 is especially suitable for crepe styles of stockings which do not appear shapely until stretched on the leg, the apertured sheet 13 of the insert enabling the colour of the stockings to be seen whilst masking the crinkled seam.

FIGURE 9 illustrates the bottom part 20 and FIGURE 10 illustrates the lid 21 of a box which may be used in conjunction with packages according to the present invention. The length and Width of the box and lid should be such as to enable packs as illustrated in FIGURES 1, 2, 5 and 7 to be neatly accommodated therein and the depth should be appropriate for receiving one, two, three or more packages as may be desired.

The lid is formed with a large opening 22 therein leaving a margin 23 slightly wider than the margin 6 of the package as shown in FIGURES 1 and 5. The present invention includes the combination of packages and boxes substantially as herein described and illustrated.

I claim:

A stocking display pack comprising a rectangular envelope having front and rear faces made of transparent material and provided with an opaque marginal border around one face thereof to simulate a picture frame, an insert for said envelope consisting of two sheets of equal size having a single common edge by which the sheets are hinged and wherein one of said sheets has an opening therein, a second insert over which a pair of stockings can be draped positioned between said sheets, a pictorial representation on one of said hinged sheets of said first insert positioned behind said frame so that one face of the pack resembles a framed picture While the other face of said pack provides a view of said draped stockings, and a closure flap for an opening in said pack through which opening the inserts are introduced.
