SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,76. dated July 10, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, FRANK MEsKER and HENRY F. EDW'ARDS, of St. Louis, Missouri, have jointly made a new and useful Improvement in IlateMet-al Columns, of which the following is a full, elear,and exact description.

The improvement relates to sheet-metal columns used in building-fronts and composed mainly of metallic sheets and angle-irons, and more especially to that'class of such columns termed auglecolumns.

The improvement consists in the special shape and combination of the parts composing the column, substantially as is hereinafter described and claimed, and as illustrated in the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved column as before being ornamented; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the column ornamented; Fig. 4, a view in perspective, from its front, ofthe ornamented column; Fig.5,a vertical section,upon an enlarged scale, showing, in detached parts, the front portion of the ornamented column;

and Fig. 6, a horizontal section, upon an enlarged scale, on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2.

The column is composed of three partsan The angleiron is of the usual shape. The face is either plain or molded. The check, at each side edge, is provided with a flange, c c, the

flanges and main portion 0 of the cheek being in one piece. The three parts are riveted together, substantially as shown.

The ornamental portions D E F, each or all of them, may be attached to the face of the column, substantially as shown.

\Ve claim- The herein-described anglecolumu, consist ing of the angle-iron, the face, and the cheek having a flange at each side edge, combined substantially as described.
