BUILDING FRONT. No. 437,671. Patented Sept. 30. 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD T, MESKIIR, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BUILDING-FRONT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,671, dated. September 30, 1890.
Application filed February 27, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BERNARD T. MESKEE,'of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvementin Building-Fronts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improved means whereby building-fronts of different widths can be readily and economically constructed.
The invention relates to that class of build-- ing-fronts which are largely composed of sheet or plate metal, and it has reference more especially to that portion of the front which is above the first story thereof; and it consists in the special combination of principal and sub columns, substantially as is hereinafter set forth and claimed, aided by the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation showing a portion of a building-front in which the improvement is embodied; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4, horizontal sections upon the line 1 1, of Fig. 1, and respectively showing sub-columns of different widths, the sub-columns shown in Fig. 2 being narrower than are those in Fig. 3 and wider than are those in Fig. 4, and the principal column being the same width in all the three figures.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
The building-front A is of the customary form, saving as it is modified by the improvement under consideration. Only the story a. is shown, and only a portion of the story, it being sufficient for an exemplification of the improvement.
B B represent the windows.
0 represents a principal column, and D D represent the sub-columns, which are associated with each principal column. The three columns occupy the space between the windows. If it is desired to widen the buildingfront, the sub-columns are widened, but the width of the principal column is maintained, by which means the space between the windows is correspondingly increased and by suitably widening the sub-columns throughout the building-front the desired width of front is obtained. If it is desired to narrow the Serial No. 342,015. (No model.)
building-front the sub-columns are narrowed, but the principal column is not changed in width, and by suitably narrowing the subcolumns throughout the building-front the desired width of front is again obtained. Now, in a previous construction of mine, I have attained this same result, but by employing a single sub-column between two principal columns.
The principal column 0 and also the subcolumns D D may be of any desirable shape and proportions and have any style of ornamentation consistent with the principle of the improvement. Suitable fastenings E are used to unite the sub-columns with the principal column, as shown, and the sub-columns at their edges d d are suitably secured to the window-frames b b, or other part of the building-front. The central column 0 and the subcolumn D D, in eifect form a composite column consisting of a central column and two flanking columns, all separable from each other.
I claim 1. A building-front of the class described, adapted to be widened .or narrowed by means of wide or narrower sub-columns, said subcolumns being in twos with an intermediate principal column, substantially as described.
2. In abuilding-front of the class described, the combination of a series of sub-columns and principal columns, said sub-columns being in twos with an intermediate principal column, substantially as described.
3. In a building-front of the class described, the combination of a principal column 0 and two sub-columns D D, substantially as described.
4. A sheet-metal composite column consisting of a central column and two flanking columns, said flanking columns being detachable from said central column, substantially as described.
Witness my hand this 20th day of February, 1890.
BERNARD T. MESKER.
