P. MESKER. BUILDING FRONT COLUMN.
No. 449,553. Patented Mar. 31, 1891.
lap-z 4 M ZZ UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK MESKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BUILDING-FRONT COLUMN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 449,553, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed May 29, 1890. Renewed February 24, 1891. $erial No. 382,651. (No model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK MESKER, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Building-Front Columns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The improved column under consideration is a composite structure, usually of wood, and consisting of three upright members suitably united, and altogether forminga column having the appearance of a pair of pilasters spaced apart by an intermediate member, substantially as is hereinafter described and claimed, aided by the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a View in perspective of the improved column; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same, and Fig. 3 a front elevation of the same. The last two named views are upon an enlarged scale.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
A A represent the uprights which constitnte the pilaster element of the structure, and B represents what may be termed a subcolumn, which is arranged between the up rights A A so as to come opposite the rearward extensions a a of the uprightsA A, respectivelythat is, the uprights AA are similar, each consisting of a front portion a and a rear portion a, said rear portion being narrower in width than is said front portion a. By this means an offset a is formed in each upright A at each side thereof, and the subcolumn B is held in the opposing offsets of the uprights A A, substantially as is shown, and the three parts A AB are united by means of cross-strips 0, applied to the said parts at the back thereof and secured thereto by means of screws D D, substantially as shown.
This composite column can be ornamented as desired, so as to present in front any desirable architectural effect.
hen the column is inserted in the building-front, the offsets a (B, at the outer sides, respectively, of the column, are utilized in making the connection between the column and the adjacent portions of the buildingfront.
I claim- The herein-described composite column, the same consisting of a pair of pilasters A A and the intermediate sub-column B, united by the cross -strips 0, substantially as described.
Vitness my hand this 30th day of April, 1890.
FRANK MESKER.
