Be it known that I, Jarras F. MoLLoY, of Vest Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lever-Buckles, ofwhich the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of leverbuckles in which the lever is provided at its ends with pivots or trunnions formed integral therewith, and in which the buckle-frame or front plate has at its opposite sides inwardlyturned ears, in which the bearings for thepivots or trunnions are formed.

My invention consists in a novel construction of the frame or front plate, whereby bearings for the lever pivots or trunnions are formed, and in the combination of the lever with such a frame or front plate, as hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a rear View or elevation of a buckle enibodying my invention; and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views upon a plane indicated by the dotted line :c m, Fig, l, Fig. 2 showing the lever with the buckle closed, and Fig. 3 showing the lever with the buckle open or raised to permit of the adjustment of the strap under the lever. Fig. 4 is a perspective rear view of the frame or front plate with the lever removed; and

Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the lever, the first showing the rear or outer side of the lever and the latter showing thev inner side of the lever.

The frame ishere represented as having an eye or opening, a, in its lever part, through which may be passed the hook of the button-hole tabs, which are ordinarily applied tothe buckles of Suspenders. rlhe lever has its upper edge or top turned inward, as shown atb, and serrated or provided with teeth or spurs, which are adapted to engage the strap, which is inserted between the lever and the frame, when the lever is swung inward to closed position, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The lever Bswings upon pivots or trunnions b', upon which it is hung, and which are formed integral with the lever and project from its ends, as shown best in Figs. 5 and 6. The pivots or trunnions b are journaled. in bearings which are provided upon the front plate or frame, A`, and which are best shown in Figs. l and 4.

At opposite sides of the frame .A are inwardly-turned ears a, which are substantially parallel with the plane of the frame A, and which are provided, as here represented, at their upper edges with downwardly and inwardly turned hooks c. Inward ot' the hooks a2 the ears a are provided with iauges ai, and, as here represented, these flanges are offset at the points at directly toward the body of the frame A, and this to a certain extent closes the bottom of the hooks o?. The trunnions or pivots b of the lever B are inserted behind the ears a and upward into the hooks c2, and the flanges c3, which are protruded into or partly close the downwardly-presented hooks c2, as shown best in Fig. 2, come below the pivots or trnnnions b, as best shown in Fig. 2, and forni the lower portion ofthe bearings for said pivots or trunnions. Moreover, the flanges c3, being offset inward at a* from the ears o', form seats to receive the lever B when the latter is closed, as represented in Figs. l and 2, and enable nieto produce a buckle which has a dat plain back and no projections at the back upon which the clothing may catch.

I have shown the lever B as having at the ends inwardly-turned tongues b2, which, when the lever is closed, underlie the flanges of", as shown in Fig. 2, and Vby thus underlying the ilanges, which form a part of the bearings, the

tongues b" relieve the pivots or trnnnions b to a considerable extent of upward strain, which results from the use of the buckle.

I have shown the lower edge or bottoni of the'buckle-lever as turned inward similarly to the top edge, where are the vspurs b, and this lower edge is also serrated or provided with any desired nnniber of spurs b3, which engage the strap when the lever B is closed, as shown in Fig. 2, and by their engagement with the strap add greatly to the holding power of the lever.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In the lever-buckle herein described, the combination, with the lever having at its ends pivots or trunnions, of a frame having ears IOO 2 f saar/s3 turnedinward and provided with downwardlypresented and inwardly-turned hooks to receive beneath them and behind the ears the pivots or trunnions of the lever, said ears also having flanges which underlie the pivots or trunnions to hold them in said hooks, substantiallyas herein described.

2. The combination, with alever, B, having pivots or trunnions b at the ends, of a frame, as A, having the inwardly-turned earsa, surmounted by downwardly and inwardly turned hooks a and provided with the inwardly-offset flanges a3, against the outer faces of which the lever closes, thereby producing a buckle with a at plain back, substantially as herein described. n

3. The combination, with a lever, B, having integral pivots or trunnions at its ends, of a frame, as A, having the inwardly-turned ears a', provided with hooks a2, and iianges, as co3, to form the bearings for the lever, the said lever having inwardly-turned tongues Zwhich engage with the said ears when the lever is closed and relieve the pivots or trunnions of strain, substantially as herein described.

4. The combination, with a lever-buckle frame, of a lever pivoted therein and having its upper edge provided with spurs for engaging the strap, and also having its lower edge turned in and formed with spurs for engaging the strap, substantially as herein described.
