IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENSION-BUCKLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,917', dated August 11, 1874 application tiled April 9, 1874.

To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER J. WEL- DON, of 'San J os, Santa Clara county, State another, that when a suspender is threaded into such buckle-top so as to rest against the top of the tongue, and the material or article to be suspended is placed in position so as to be caught between the bent bottom end of this tongue and body-piece, any tension that may be brought to bear on the suspender fg, together with the weight of the article sus- I pended, shall draw and hold them tighter together, and form by such compression, without injury to the materials thus connected, a lnost effective suspension-buckle. Secondly, my invention also relates to an adjustable tab iitted to the end of the suspender thus caught, so as to prevent such suspender from being withdrawn during any subsequent readjustment of the suspension-buckle for tightening or loosening purposes. 1

With reference to the gures in the draw ing, B is the buckle-top; T, the tongue; C, the body-piece, and t the tab. The buckletop B consists of a bent piece of sheet metal, provided with teeth u at the top of a central opening, O, a slot, s, immediately beneath this opening, and on each side small holes for the top projections if of the body-piece C to t into, so as to allow of its pivoting thereon. The body-piece C consists, also, of a piece of sheet metal, which is shaped narrow at the top, so asl to it the buckle-top B aforementioned, and broad at the bottom, where it is pinched forward in the form of a U, so as to admit of the bent end of the tongue T. Over this bent portion or catch a an opening, K, is provided, for this tongue T to iit into and pivot on the ears e e of the body-piece by means of corresponding ears d d and pin m. At the bottom bent end portion of this tongue T, where it is made considerably broader, teeth g g are provided, so as to obtain abetter gripe of any material placed between it and the body-piece C, and at the top it is slightly bent forward into a lip, h, so as to catch any suspender that may be placed between it and the buckle-top teeth n, but without in any way piercing such material or suspender, as both these upper and lower teeth have flattened edges. The tab t consists of a small bent piece of sheet metal, wherein another bent piece, q, pivots at o t, so as to form a kind of box, in such manner that after having been opened by swinging this lid q backward, and

passing the end of a suspender into it the Y closing of this lid will 'cause the portion l, from its bent shape, to press tighter on this suspender, and thus secure it the more perfectly the more it is pressed home.

In applying this suspension buckle, the spring-tongue T is pressed back against the body-piece C, the buckle-top B pivoted round at right angles to the body-piece, and the tongue, thus disengaged, brought forward. A suspender is now threaded through the opening O neXttothe teeth n; then passed over the top of the body-piece, then back through this opening, and again threaded through the slot s, so as to rest on the top of the depressed bar b of the buckle-top B, where the end is secured to the tab t so as to prevent it being withdrawn during any subsequent adjustment. The article to be suspended is placed into the U-shaped portion a of the body-piece, and the tongue T is immediately brought back to its connecting-buckle will now be found all firmly,

One of the principal advantages claimed in this buckle is, that it secures by compression only, since both the upper and lower teeth, n

and g, respectively, have at edges, so as not to puncture, and consequently injure, the suspender or article suspended.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a suspension-buckle, of a top buckle-piece, B, provided with slot s and the teeth a at the opening O, springtongue T, provided with lip h and teeth g g, and the body-piece C, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. The combination of the adjustable clip or tab t, provided with pivoted lid q and tongue l, with the suspension-buckle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
