SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 381,879, datedApril 24, 1888.

To a. whom it 77mg concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. HOWARD, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have inventeda new and use- 5 ful Improvement in Elastic Bands, of which the following. taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of bands, more or less elastic, that are used for holding together papers or other articles of comparatively small bulk, the object being to produce a band that shall'be cheap, sufficiently elastic, and present a suitable surface for receiving writing and printing. This object I attain by 1 the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of one of my hands, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the band as it appears when applied to its use of holding a package of articles together.
Heretofore bands have been made of rubber or of some similar substance used alone or interwoven with a textile fabric, or in some cases metallic springs have been used in con- 2 5 nection with a strap of some suitable material,
like cloth or leather.
My device consists in making the elastic strap partly of an elastic piece or pieces, A A, which are cemented or otherwise fastened to the non-elastic parts B B. The parts B B are made of some smooth strong material that is adapted to receive printing or writing either to expose the contents of the bundle, the own ers name, or as an advertisement. The parts B B are made, preferably, of paper, although there are other substances that might do for the purpose.
The elastics proper, A A, may be attached at either end, as shown in the drawings, or but a single piece may be used.
It is obvious that the parts B B may be colored, embossed, or otherwise ornamented, as the manufacturer may desire.
I claim- An elastic band consisting of the elastic piece J, 5 or pieces A A and the piece or pieces B B, adapted to receive writing or printing, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
