ROBERT F. NIXON, 3'11, 0]? PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE A. REACH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FO'RLI FOR BASEBALL GLOVES.
Application filed January 5, 1923. Serial No. 610,780.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT F. NIXON, J r., a citizen of the United States, and resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forms for Baseball Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention concerns a form for holding base ball gloves in proper position during shipment. These gloves are heavily padded and as manufactured are shaped with the fingers and thumb inclined inwardly or towards the palm side of the glove. It has been found that frequently during shipment, due to the shocks and jars, the padding becomes bunched and the proper shape or spread of the fingers is lost, which the present invention aims to prevent.
A form constructed in accordance with my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the form with the glove shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a side View.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of a modification of thumb connection.
Fig. et is a sectional detail of one of the finger ends, and
Fig. 5 is a similar View of a modification.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates the form which comprises a palm portion 1 finger portions 1 and a thumb portion 1. This may be constructed of any suitable material in sheet form, such as papier mach, heavy cardboard, vulcanized fibre, or the like, either laminated or as a single sheet the only requisite being that it shall be comparatively stiff and capable of holding or retaining its shape.
The fingers are curved inwardly or towards the palm portion as shown, and the thumb is inclined inward, so that these parts conform in position to the position of the respective portions of the gloves when in proper shape. The thumb portion may consist of a separate piece'riveted to themain portion, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or it may be made integral, as shown in Fig. 3.
It would be very difficult to insert the form in a glove in the absence of some means to facilitate this, and for this purpose I provide the ends of the finger and thumb portions with rounded terminal enlargements. These may be made'as integral parts, as shown at a and b, or as separately molded pieces glued to the respective portions, as shown at a.
Such a form may be so economically manufactured as not to add appreciably to the cost of the glove, and will effectually prevent bunching or alteration of the shape of the glove during shipment, and may also be used as a support for the glove for display purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is -1. A form for use in shipping base ball gloves, comprising a sheet of relatively stili material having palm, finger and thumb portions, said finger and thumb portions being curved or inclined inwardly or towards the palm side of the glove. 7
2. A form for use in shipping base ball gloves, comprising a sheet of relatively stiff material having palm, finger and thumb portions, said finger and thumb portions be ing curved or inclined inwardly or towards the palm side of the glove, said finger and thumb portions having terminal enlargements.
3. A form for use in shipping base ball gloves, said form being composed of relatively stifl material and having finger and thumb portions all curved or inclined towards one and the same face.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
ROBERT F. NIXON, JR.
