UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WVINTERBON ELLIOTT, OF MON OTON, NEW BRUNSYVIGK, CANADA.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,748, dated April 10,1888.
Application filed February 27, 1888. Serial No. 265,770. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WINTERBON ELLIOTT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, of Moncton, New Brunswick, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aplan of a blank from which my new box is made. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspectives of my new box partially folded from the blank shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 shows my new box completely folded from the blank shown in Fig. 1.
My invention consists in a box two side pieces of which have inwardlybeut ears that are secured between the other side pieces and inwardly-bentflaps thereon,thelast-mentioned side pieces being provided with flaps folded across portions of the other two sides and in wardly into the box, whereby four sides of the box are formed near each corner, of th ree thicknesses of stock, thus giving the corners increased strength and durability.
In the drawings, the blank A is scored at a and cut or slit at a, and preferably recessed at a", as will be hereinafter eXplained,-thus forming the bottom side, a sides a, ears a sides a, and flaps a and a The blank A'thus scored and cut is readily folded, as shown in Figs. 2, 3,
V and 4., to form my new box, the sides a and cars a thereon being first bent into proper relation to the end pieces or sides, a, and the bot tom a as shown in Fig. 2, and the flaps a being then bent inwardly to engage the ears a on the sides a. The flaps a on sides a are now bent across the sides a, (see Figs. 8 and 4,) and the rectangular portions of the flaps a are bent inwardly, as shown in Fig. 4. It is very desirable that there should be a recess, a between the edges of flaps a and the rectangular portions of flaps a equal in width to at least two thicknesses of stock, in order to have the rectangular portions of the flaps a fold neatly in place. For the best fit possible the width of the recesses a should be equal to the thickness of a side, a, car a and flaps a and by making the recesses o about three thicknesses of stock in width and making the inner edge of the rectangular portions of flaps a straight my new boxis made without the use of paste, fasteners, or the like, as the sides a a are locked in place by the contact of the inner edges of the rectangular portions against the inwardly-folded flaps a.
When my new boxes are used in pairs, one fitting into the other, an exceedingly cheap and durable packing-box, especially suited for the use of tailors and dealers in furnishing goods, hardware, &c., is produced, the six thicknesses of stock then present at four corners of the compound box making it capable of withstanding much hard usage. Of course, the parts a a a" a above referred to may be pasted together, if desired; but when my box is scored and cutin the manner above described the parts are readily locked together without the use of glue, paste, or fasteners, as will be plain to all skilled in the art.
It will be plain to all skilled in the art that while my new box is most readily made from ablank all the divisions of which are integral it may yet be made of separate pieces of proper shape secured together.
What I claim is- 1. The herein-described box-blank A, scored and cut to form side pieces, a a" a a a, each side piece at having two ears, a and each side a having a flap, a and two flaps, a substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The hereindescribed box made up of side a sides a a a a", the sides a having inwardly-bent ears a between the sides a a and the inwardly-bent flaps a thereon, and the sides a a having flaps a folded against portions of the outer and inner surfaces of sides a substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES WINTERBON ELLIOTT.
