Description
J. SROFE.
BOX BLANK. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 20. 1919.
Patented Feb, 17,1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE SROFE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BOX-BLAH K.
Application filed September 20, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn Scorn, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Blanks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing where Figure l is a plan view of the blank. Figs. 2 and 3 show stages in the folding of the sections.
I have shown a blank of card-board or other material scored to form the nine sections illustrated by numerals 1 to 9. They are cut at the lines 10 and 12, respectively, between sections 6 and 2 and 7 and 2.
In assembling the blank is folded on lines 13, 14, 15 and lap 5 is projected into section 9 and pasted to it so that edge 16 of the section 9 ust meets edge 17 of section 4.
The lap 5 is of peculiar formation. It is of sufficient width to insure a firm contact surface for engagement with section 9 and its lower edge 18 lies flush with the lower edge of section 9. Its outer edge 19 may be parallel with line 17 throughout the greater portion of its length. Near one end, however, this lap is tapered as at 20.
With sections 4, 3, 8, 9 folded and secured as described flaps 6 and 7 are turned inward, flap 6 being folded first because its surface area just corresponds with the area inclosed by the walls, to insure a uniform and uninterrupted surface. Flap 7 may be smaller and be turned in upon flap 6.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Serial No. 325,044.
configurations of the meeting edges will accomplish the same purpose.
The finished structure, whether cubical or of other angular formation, presents five inner surfaces hich are continuous and uninterrupted besides being firml held together. One side is left open. his may be closed by a suitable cover when the structure is intended to form a carton or a single container. An object of my invention, however, is to provide a plurality of such structures in the form and design of childrens building blocks of successively diminishing sizes so that they may be nested one within another.
I claim as my invention:
1. A box blank having a plurality of foldable sections, one of said sections having a lap adapted to be secured to the inner face of another section, and a section having a tongue adapted to lie against the inner face of said second section and to contact with the surface thereof not covered by said lap,
the edges of said tongue and lap being in close contact, the folded structure being open at one end.
2. A box blank having a plurality of foldable sections, one of said sections having a lap with a free edge of irregular formation adapted to be secured to the inner face of another section, and a section having a tongue adapted to lie against the inner face of said second section and having its free edge of a formation corresponding to the edge of said lap, to contact with the surface of said second section not covered by said lap, the edges of said tongue and lap being in close contact.
3. A box blank having a plurality of foldable sections, one of said sections having a lap with a free edge tapered at one end, said lap being adapted to be secured to the inner face of another section, and a section having a tongue adapted to lie against the inner face of said second section having its free edge flared and adapted to contact with the surface of said second section not covered by said lap, the edges of said tongue and lap being in close contact, the folded structure being open at the side opposite the section having a tongue.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
. JESSE SROFE.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 1,331,395, granted February 17 1920, upon the application of Jesse Srofe, of Cincinnati, Ohio, for an improvement in Box-Blanks, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction as follows: Line 80, claim 1, for the word end read side; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
Signed and sealed this 9th day of March, A. D., 1920.
[SEAL] M. H. COULSTON,
Acting Commissioner of Patents. Cl. 22916.
