UNITED STATES PATENT trieso VALENTINE HOWELL, OF GENEVA, ILLINOIS.
ClGAR-TIP CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,32, dated April 3, 1888.
Application filed October ll, 1887. Serial No. 252,097. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that l, VALENTINE HOWELL, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Geneva, in the county of Kane and State 4of Illinois, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Gigar- Tip Cutters, of which the following is a speeication, reference being had therein to the accgmpanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a machine for slitting the tips of cigars with out such cigar-tips losing their original shape; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,l'igurel represents a vertical section through the center of the machine; Fig. 2,21. section on line x in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a section on line y y in Fig. 1.
Corresponding referential characters in the several figures ot the drawings designate like parts.
A denotes a bell-shaped metal frame having secured by screws b a base-plate, B. This frame A has at its top a hub, a, bored to form a vertical guide for the Ytubular stem C, provided on its upper end with a knob or handle, c. This stem C hasinsertedinto aslotted opening and secured therein by soldering or other means a plate of sheet steel, d, wedge-shaped and provided on its outward inclined edge with small saw-teeth. The hub c has a slot, e, through its oblong projection for the steel plate d to move and be guided therein. The
lower end of stem C is screw-threaded for a nut, f, forming a shoulder for limiting the upward movement of said stem, and at the same time for abutting the upper end of a conical spiral spring, F, seated upon the base B inside of the bell-shaped frame A. A conical socket, g, is bored into the slotted portion of hub a, centrally in line with such slit, which socket g is shaped to correspond with the shape of the tip of a cigar, and is so located relative to stem C that while the tip of a cigar is inserted into such socket with one hand and the stem C is pushed downward with the other hand the sawplate d will cut a slit into such cigar-tip that will form a convenient vent for the smoke to be drawn through into the mouth of the smoker without otherwise destroying or damaging the cigar-tip. Upon releasing the handle c the spring E will raise the stem C again to be in position for the next cigar.
What I claim is- A cigar-tip cutter consisting of the box or bell shaped base A, a hub, a., integral there with, said hub being provided with a projec tion on one side having a vertical slot, e, init, and a tip-receptacle, g, formed in the projection of the hub across the line of the slot, a spring, F, mounted in the base A, and stem C, supported upon the spring, said stem being passed through hub a and provided with an inclined saw-toothed or serrated blade, d, held in the slot e of the hub projection, all con structed and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
