UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. ALDEN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
CIGAR-TIP CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,896, dated September 8, 1885.
Application filed June 10, 1885. (No model.)
1' 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. ALDEN, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York,- have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cigar- Tip Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of the device in the closed position and in condition for carrying in the pocket. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device in the open position and in condition for cutting off the tip of a cigar. Fig. 3 is an edge view looking down on Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is My invention consists of two disks, of circular form, pivoted togetherone provided with a central hole in which the tip of the cigar is placed to be cut, the other provided with a cutter which sweeps over the hole to do the cutting-and the main disk'also provided with a lug punched out from its body, which serves as a stop to the cutter-disk in moving in either direction, as hereinafter; described.
In the drawings, A B are the disks pivoted together at a, near one edge, so that one disk shall sweep over-the other as it is turned. The main disk A is provided with a central hole, b, of suflicient size to allow the tip of the cigar to be inserted the proper depth, and onone side, near the pivot a, it is provided with a lug, c, which is punched out of the body of the disk and acts as a stop to the other disk in turning it in either direction, as will be presently explained.
The disk B has one side out off making it into a segment with a square edge, and in this square edge is made a beveled knife or cutter, d, by swaging, grinding, filing, or otherwise, said knife resting in line with the hole in the other disk and sweeping over it when the disks are closed together. i The edge of the cutter-disk is rounded around the pivot, and the upper portion above the pivot is cut at a square backward bevel, as shown at f.
The lug 0 stands vertically, and is in such position that when the cutter-disk is closed the square front side strikes the lug, as shown in Fig. 1, and when it is opened the square bevel f strikes it, as shown in Fig. 2. The lug thus acts as a stop to the cutter-disk in moving in either direction, and the sweep of the cutter-disk is just such as to cover and uncover the hole properly to do the cutting.
By this means great simplicity and cheapness are attained, and the lug does not project outward beyond the cutter-disk, and thus the thickness of the whole device is onlythe thicknessof the'two disks.
The lug is truck up with a square shoulder next to the edge of the cutterdisk to prevent any wedging or spreading action, and to furnisha solid stop to the cut-terdisk.
The device above described is in simple and convenient form for pocket use, as it is only of about the size and thickness of, a silver halfdollar.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pati A device for cutting cigar'tips, consisting of the two disks A B, pivoted together at one edge, the disk A being provided with a central hole to admit the eigar'tip, and with a lug, c, struck out from its body near the pivot, the disk B being squared on one side, having a cutter, d, which sweeps over the hole, and provided above the pivot with a backward bevel, f, whereby the cutter-disk is stopped in either direction at the end of its sweep by striking the lug, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I O. S. 'ALDEN.
Witnesses:
R. F. Oseoon, M. E. FURLONG.
