My invention relates to the class of devices commonly employed for perforating or' eutting the closed end of aicigar. for the purpose of permitting draught therethrough,

and an objectof my invention, among others,y

is to provide a device of this class that shall be simple in constructioneasy in operation and particularly effective 1n the results produced thereby.

One form of cutter embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved cigar cutter. Y Y

In the accompanyinng drawings the numeral 5 indicates the base of my improved cutter having a supporting post G rising therefrom and having the bottom 7 of a cutter case located thereon and preferably i'ormed integral therewith. A shell 8 is removably secured to the bottom 7 in any suitable manner, said bottom preferably having a reduced portion forming a shoulder against which the bottom edge of the shell is seated.

A receiver 9 is located partially within the shell and projects outwardly through an opening 10 in the top of the shell, this receiver having a iiange 11 that is pressed by a spring 12 against a lip 13 bounding the opening 10 through the top of the shell, said spring pressing against said flange. .Said receiver has a recess 14 in its outer end shaped to receive the closed end or tip of a cigar, and a slit 15 extends diametrically across the receiver from the inner end to a point near the outer end thereof and through the recess 14.

A cutter carrier 16 is rotatably mounted in a carrier support 17 rising from the bottom 7, this cutter carrier being of bellscrank form and comprising a cutter actuating lip 18 extending laterally and underlying` the edge of the receiver 9, and as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. The body of the carrier projects into an opening 19 extending inwardly from the bottornoii the recvciver and acrosswhich opening the slit 15 extends. A cutter 20 is secured to the carrier 16 andis in the form of a blade adapted to pass along the slit 15 and across the recess" 141i The operation rof the device will be/readily understood, it being obvious that the tip of a cigar being placed in the recess 1st andV pressure being exerted thereon the receiver 9 will be moved downwardly against the force of the spring 12. In this movement of the receiver its lower end will be pressed against the lip 18 thereby swinging the body 16 on its pivot and passing the cutter 20 across the recess 14 and through the tip ot' the cigar, thereby lmaking a slit Vin said tip. Upon release of pressure on the receiver the latter will be returned by the spring to its former position and the carrier 16 will be returned to its normal position by another spring 21 seated at one end in a recessin the bottom 7 and 'at its other end in a recess in the lip 18, and as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3 of the drawings, in this return movement of the body the cutter retracing its path of movement in the slit in the cigar tip.y

In accordance with the provisions ot the patent statutes I have described the prinf ciples of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now considerto represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device showniis only illustrative and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.

I claim- 1. Acigar cutter including a support, a

receiver inovably mounted and inclosed with-` in the support and projecting outwardly through an opening therein andhaving a recess for a cigar tip, a cutter carrier movably mounted and having a cutter positioned. to pass across .said recess, and means on said carrier adapted to be engaged by said receiver to effect cutting movement of said cutter.

A cigar cutter including a support, a receiver movably mounted in the support and having a recess for a cigar tip, a pivotally mounted cutter carrier located within the receiver and having a cutter positioned to pass across said'recess, and means on said carrier ada ted to be engaged by said receiver to `e ect cutting movementV of said cutter.` i i l f 3.
