Description

Wibpssez (No Model.) D
S. R. BAILEY.
I SLEIGH. No. 379,308. I Patented Mar. 13, 1.888.
' a X {X UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL R. BAILEY, OF AMESBUBY, MASSACHUSETTS.
SLEIGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 379,303, dated March 13, 1888.
Application filed October 15, 1887. Serial No. 252,426. (No model.)
of Massachusetts, have invented a new aud' useful Im provement in Sleighs, which improvement will, in connection with the accompanying drawings, be hereinafter fully described, andspecifically defined in the appended claims.
Figure l is a side elevation of a sleigh embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached horizontal section taken as on line Z Z, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached vertical section taken as on line X X, Fig. 2.
My invention relates to that class or kind of sleighs which have a recessed or set-back dasher; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring again to the drawings, A represents the sleigh-top, as it is termed by the trade; B, the runner; O C, the standards; D
D, the bars on which top A rests; E, the metal braces, and F the shafthangers, all said parts, except bars D, being duplicated upon the respective sides of the sleigh.
H represents the curved side bars of the dasher, which extend downward to the bottom of top A and serve as the front cornerpieccs thereof. The dasher I, which extends upward from top A the extent of bars H, is secured in a rabbet therein, as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, said dasher extending from side to side of the sleigh in the usual manner. A re-enforcing iron, I), plano-convex in crosssection, is secured to each bar H in the usual manner, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the shoes at of runners B- extend up the length of said runners. For the purpose of connecting the upper end of the runners B with the dasher at its side bars, H, in a neat, strong, and inexpensive manner, and so that it may for any purpose be quickly disconnected therefrom, Ihave invented the metallic coupling G, which consists, essentially, of the back plate, h, the side checks, (1, the hollow neck 0, having a concave seat to receive iron I), and with a'scroll-like head, 6, formed hollow, as shown by cavity f, Fig. 3. The lower end of back plate, h, of said coupling is secured to runner B'by a rivet, 2', which passes through and secures together the runner, the coupling, and shoe a, while bolt 9 unites the runner, the shoe, the dasher, the coupling, and iron 11, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Said coupling is formed of malleable iron or other suitable cast metal, and is preferably of an ornamental or carved-work pattern, as shown. It receives into cavityfthe extremities of runner B and shoe a, and serves as a means, with bolt 9, to unite the runner and dasher in a very improved manner.
The style and plan of the sleigh, the number of standards and bars, and the brace-work E may all be varied as desired without departing from the substance of my invention, as they constitute no part thereof, it consisting in a metallic coupling formed to receive in a suitable cavity therein the upper portion of the runner and its shoe and having a seat to receive the re-enforce iron of the dasher, to-
gether with a passage for the securing-bolt by which the parts are held together, as also the combination of said coupling with the coacting parts; hence I claim as my inventionl. The metallic coupling G, formed to receive the upper ends of the runner and its metallic shoe, and with a seat or suitable hearing for the re-enforce iron of the dasher, and with suitable passages for bolts or rivets whereby the respective parts are firmly secured together, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination of coupling G, formed substantially as described, runner B, its iron a, dasher I, its bars H, and re-enforce iron I), and the securing-bolt 9, all as specified.
SAMUEL R. BAILEY.
