Description
(No Model.) A. C. WHITTIKER'.
SLEIGH. No. 599,991. Patented Mar` 1,1898.
/N VEN rag UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE'.
ANTHONY C. WHITTIKER, OF NAUGATUCK, CONNECTICUT.
SLEIGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,991, dated March 1, 1898.
Application led February 25, 1897. Serial No. 624,956.` (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, ANTHONY C. WHTTTI- KER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Naugatuck, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleighs, of which the. following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sleighs, sleds, and similar articles; and the object thereof is to provide an article of this class the runners of which constitute the side frames thereof and which is so constructed that said runners cannot warp or twist or yield to lateral pressure applied thereto.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form apart, in which- Figure lis a side view of a sled constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional plan View thereof, and Fig. 3 a plan view of a detail of the construction.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals .of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention Iiprovide a sleigh or sled which comprises two runners 5, the lower edges of which are provided with metal shoes or plates 6, and the runners 5 constitute the side frames of the sleigh and may be made of .any desired height, and I also provide a bottom 7, which is provided with side tenons or projections S, which are oblong in form in cross-section and which arev passed through similar openings 9 in the runners 5, and through which are passed pins or plugs 10, and in connection with the bottom 7 I provide end plates or boards 12, which extend from the bottom 7 upwardly and outwardly in both directions and which preferably project above the tops of the runners, and the end plates or boards 8 are provided at each end with tenons or projections 13, which are oblong in crosssection and which are passed through corresponding openings formed in the runners 5, and through which are passed pins, plugs, or bolts 14.
The runners 5, the bottom plate or board 7, and the plates or boards 12 constitute the box or body of the sleigh, and when the parts are connected, as shown and described, it will be apparent that the runners cannot warp or twist and will not yield to lateral pressure, the shape of the tenons or projections 13 and of the ends of the end plates or boards 12 on which they are formed, together with the shape of the tenons or projections 8 on the bottom plate or board 7 and the pins, plugs, or bolts 10 and 14, serving to feffectually accomplish the above result.
The pins, plugs, or bolts 10 and 14 may be of any desired length, and the separate parts of the sleigh will thus be securely braced and held in the desired position.
My improved sleigh is simple in construction and operation and is also comparatively inexpensive, and my invention is not limited to any particular material in the construction thereof.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters' Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a childs sled comprising two side boards, each of which is provided with three rectangular openings, one of which is in a horizontal plane and the other two being at a predetermined distance therefrom, and inclined thereto, a bottom piece provided-with two tenons adapted to engage said horizontal openings, and two end pieces provided with tenons adapted to engage said oblique openings whereby the said end pieces are held at an angle to said ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 22d day l of February, 1897.
ANTHONY C. WHITTIKER.
