S. B. GODDINGTON & A. D. MOGEORGE. SLEIGH GEAR.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN l5. CODDIXGTON AND ALYAN l). MCGEORGE, OF CAPAC, MICHIGAN.
SLElGH-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,500, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed June 28. 1888. Serial No. 278,496. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known thatwe, STEPHEN B. CODDING- 'rox and ALYAN l). McGEoReE, citizens of the l'nited States, residing at Capae, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Steel Cutter and Sleigh-Gear, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improx'ements in the class of running-gear for sleighs or cutters in which flat bars of steel or iron are employed to form the runners, and in which the knees and braces are also made of metal; and the objects of our invention are to produce a running-gear for sleighs or cutters having the greatest amount of strength with the least amount of weight; also, to accomplish this in a neat, durable, and simple manner and at a very. moderate expense; also, to prevent the parts becoming loosened by shrinkage, caused by different temperatures, all the parts being made of metal.
\Vith these objects in view our invention consists in the construction of certain details and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters indicate similar parts in the different figures ot' the drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our improved running-gear for sleighs. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. I} is a detail top view of one of the runners.
In the drawings, A represents the runners of a sleigh or cutter made of flat bars of steel or iron placed edgewise and secured together by rivets or bolts II, and with a block or washer between them. The knees B are formed of flat bars of steel or iron, provided with a quarter-twist G at their lower ends to secure them to the runners, while the upper ends are secured to the rave D. The braces graceful curve.
knees B are placed the truss-blocks E between the two bars composing said knees, and similar truss-blocks F are arranged near the lower part thereof, and they serve to hold the runners apart at the proper distance or desired width. A flat shoe I, also composed of steel, is secured in any suitable manner to the bottom edges of the runners A, and forms a flat surface for sliding easily on the snow or ice.
It will be readily perceived by those'skilled in the art that this forms a very strong and light running-gear for sleighs having a neat appearance, that it can be produced of material easily obtained in the market and at a reasonable cost, that it is not liable to get out of order by loosening of its parts, as is the case with wood, caused by shrinkage, and that it can be made ornamental and of any size desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In running-gear for sleighs, the combination of the runners A, made of double flat bars of metal secured together by belts or rivets, as described, with the knees B, made of double bars having a quarter-twist, and the truss-blocks E and F, all arranged as and for the purpose specified.
2. In running-gear for sleighs, the runners A, made of double fiat bars secured together by bolts or rivets, and provided with shoes I, in combination with the knees B, made of double bars provided at their lower ends with a quarter-twist for attachment to the runners, and the truss-blocks E and F, all as shown and set forth.
3. In running-gear for sleighs, the combination of the runners A, made of double flat bars of steel, secured together by bolts or rivets, and provided with shoes I, with the knees B of double bars provided with quarter-twist, as shown, the truss-blocks E and F, the braces C, and the rave D, all constructed as shown and specified.
