Description

(No Model.)
B. M. WENTWORTH.
SLEIGH RUNNER.
No. 346,337. Patents d July 27, 1886.
fiarfon if Wgnfu/o r65,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BARTON MORRILL VENTWORTH, OF BERXVIOK, MAINE.
SL ElGH-RUNNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,337, dated July 2'7, 1886.
Application filed June 14, 1886. Serial No. 205,087. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, BARTON MORRILL WENT- WORTH, of Berwick, in the county of York,of the State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleigh- Runners; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a top view, and Fig. 3 a rear elevation, of a runner embodying my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 4 is a side view of the arched bar a. Fig. 5 isa similar view of the arched bar b,while Fig. 6 is a top view, and Fig. 7 a side view, of the arched brace E, to be described. Fig. 8 is a top view, and Fig. 9 a side view, of the tie-bar F.
In such drawings, A denotes the base-bar, and B the cap-bar, of the runner, each being of wood. Fast-cued to and extending along the lower edge of the said base-bar and up to its top, and thence along the upper edge of the said capbar, is a metallic re-enforce or bar, 0. At its rear part the cap-bar rests upon and is secured to the crown of a metallic duplex truss, D, composed of two metallic bars, a and I), bent in manner as represented, and fastened at their feet to the top of the base-bar. An arched brace, E,extends in rear of and between the two bars a and b, and where between them is connected to them by rivets 0, going through it and them. A flat tie-bar, F, bent upward at a right angle near each end of it, connects the crown of the truss D. with that of the arched brace E, such bar F being extended between the crowns of the two bars a and b, and riveted thereto. Another bar, G, bent like the tie-bar F, extends over such tie-bar, and is fastened to a beam, II, which is to ex tend across and beneath the sleigh-body and be fastened thereto. The turned-down portions of the bar G lap upon the turned-up portions of the tie-bar F, such portions of the bars being connected by a screw-bolt, (I, going through them, and having a nut, e, screwed on it, as represented. A brace-bar, I,of metal, going at its rear end over the rear end portion of the tie-bar F, and with it secured to the arched brace E at the crown thereof by rivets, extends obliquely under and against the middle of the cap-bar B, to which it is secured by rivets going through both and the part of the bar 0 that rests upon the said cap-bar. Thence the brace-bar I is bent downward at an obtuse angle and fastened to the fore foot or curved-up part of the base-bar Act the runner.
A sleigh-runner thus constructed of wood and metalviz, of the wooden base-bar A and cap-bar B, and the metallic bar O, duplex truss D, and arched brace E, tie-bar F, and the brace-bar I, arranged and connected with each other as described-becomes very light, strong, and durable.
Though my said runner is somewhat analogous to the runner made as represented in the United States Patent No. 257,358, yet there areimportant differences between the two.
I claim 1. The improved sleigh runner, substantially as described, composed of the wooden base-barA and cap-bar B, and the metallic bar 0, duplex truss D, arched brace E, tiebar F, and brace-bar I, arranged and combined essentially as set forth.
2. The combination of the base and cap bars A B, the duplex truss D, arched-brace I tiebar F, and the brace-bar I, constructed, connected, and arranged substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the duplex truss D, consisting of the two bars a and b, bent as represented, with the arched brace 10, extended in rear of and between such bars, and with the tie-bar connecting such truss and brace at their crowns, all being substantially as set forth.
BARTON MORRI LL \YEN'lWYOIl'lll.
