Description

(No Model.)
. D. W. SOOBIE.
BOB SLEIGH.
Patented May 7, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DAVID W. SOOBIE, OF CAMBRIDGE, \VISCONSIN.
BOB-SLEIGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,983, dated May '7, 1889. Application filed February 26, 1889. Serial No. 301,221.. (No model.)
To all whom it 11mg concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID W. SOOBIE, of Cambridge, in the county of Dane and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bob-Sleighs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bob-sleighs; and it pertains to the peculiar construction and arrangement of the knees and cross-beams which communicate between the runners of the respective bobs, whereby either one or both of the runners of the respective bobs are free to oscillate upward and downward, either together or separately, beneath the cross-beams withoutturning or twisting said cross-beams.
The construction of my improvements is explained by reference to the'accompanying drawings, in which" Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a bob-sleigh in which such improvements are embodied. Fig. 2 represents a side view provided with my improved knee and cross-beam, shown part in section. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section through the knee and crossbeam, drawn on line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a bottom view of my improvement, part in section, drawn on line Y Y of Fig. 2.
Like parts are represented by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
The runners A, bolsters B, and reach 0 are all constructed in the ordinary manner.
The improvements to which my invention relates pertain to the peculiar construction and arrangement of the cross-beams D D and the knees E. The knees E are preferably formed of metal, the lower ends of which are formed in two parts or arms, (t a, which diverge from each other toward the right and left beneath the beams, and are secured at their lower ends to the runners F by retainin g bolts or rivets Z) Z) and c c. The upper ends of the knees are made concave, forming a semicircular seat, G, for the reception of therounded or cylindrical-shaped ends H of the cross-beams D, which nicely fit in said seats G and permit of the turning movement of the knees E beneath them as the runners oscillate upward and downward in conformity to the surface over which they are being drawn. The central portions of the seats G are provided with elongated slots I I for the reception of the lower end of the beam-re taining bolts J J. The bolts J J are rigidly secured within apertures provided therefor in the ends of the cross-beams D, while the lower ends extend down throughthe seat G and are provided with retaining-nuts K.
L is a bearing-plate interposed between the convex surface of the cross-beam D and the heads of the beam-retaining bolts J. The retaining-nuts K are left sufficiently loose to permit of the free oscillating movement of the runners and knees beneath the crossbeams. Thus it is obvious that when one of the runners is thrown upward in passing over an obstruct-ion, as shown in Fig. 1, said runner is permitted to turn freely beneath the load without twisting or straining the beam connected therewith. It is also obvious that both of the runners in either bob are permitted to turn in passing over an uneven surface beneath the load without twisting the beams or straining the other parts of the sleigh connected therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bob-sleigh, the combination, with the runners of the respective bobs, of the knees E E, provided with concave bearings or seats G, for the reception of the ends of the crossbeams, and bolt-retaining slots I, for the reception of the beam-retaining bolts J, crossbeams D D, having rounded or cylindrical bearing-surfaces H at their respective ends conforming in shape to the concave surface of said knees, and beamretaining bolts J J, rigidly affixed at their upper ends to the ends of said cross-beams and at their lower ends within the retaining-slots I of said knees, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a bob-sleigh, the combination of the knees E E, provided at their upper ends with concave bearingsurfaces for the reception of the ends of the cross-beams and attheir lower ends with diverging arms a a, secured to the runners by retaining bolts or rivets, cross- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in I0 beams D D, having cylindrical bearing-surpresence of two Witnesses.
faces conforming in shape to the bearing-surfaces of said knees, and beanvretaining bolts DAVID V. SCOBIE.
J rigidly secured at their upper ends in the ends of said cross-beams and operating at \Vitnesses:
their lower ends within the slots I of the beam- J AS. 1- ERWIN,
supporting knees, all substantially as and for ANNA, FAUST.
the purpose specified,
