Description

UNITED S'rA'rEs PATENT @Errea GEORGE A. LOOKVVOOD, OF NEVADA, IOWA.
IMPRovEMENT IN sLEDs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,?19, dated March i7, 1874; application Jfiled August 23, 1873.
To all whom lit may concern."
Beit known thatl, GEORGE ALANsoN LocriwooD, of Nevada, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bearings for Bob-Sled Runners 5 an d I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, ref erence being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. Y
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal section of my bob-sled. Fig. 2 is a detail of same. Fig. 3 is asectional de tail of saine.
This invention relates to a novel mode of conn cctin g the bodies of sleds to their runners, so as to allow alongitudinal rocking motion of the runners independent of the bodies. It consists in a half-round rocking plate, which is supported and held down upon a corresponding scat or bearer on the knee of the runner, and constructed with a tenon, which passes vertically through the knee, and receives a holding-down pin transversely through it, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the runner of a bob-sled; and B, an open elevated knee, on top of which the body of the sled is mounted. On top of this knee I form a laterally-elongated concave seat, c2, of greater length than the width of the knee, and which extends out equal distances on opposite sides thereof. Upon this seat a cap-plate, O, has its bearing, on thebottom of which platea half-round tenon, c1, and a tongue, O1, are formed. The tenon is received into the seat c2, and allows the cap-plate C to rock freely forward and backward, and the tongue G1 passes vertically through t-he top of the knee B and receives a pin, fi, transversely through its lower end, just beneath arcs of. circles b, which are concentric to the axis of motion ot' the rocking cap-plate O, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The tongue O1 steadies the cap-plate O, and the pin t' holds this plate down securely upon its seat. Outside of the knee, and applied beneath the elongated and rounded ends of the seat c2, is a selnicircular strap, g, which is grooved, as shown in Fig. 3, and intended to serve in connection with a band, and suits as a means for securing the body of the sled down upon its cap-plate in a very substantial manner. This strap, with its fastening, also assists in holding the cap-plate down upon its seat, and at the same time to allow the required longitudinally-rocking motion.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is-
1. The rocking cap-plate O constructed with a tcnon, el, which is supported in a seat, c2, in combination with a tongue, O1, which passes vertically through a slot, a, and receives a pin, t', through it beneath arcs b, substantially as described.
2. The cap-plate O having the semicircular strap g, combined with the elongated halfrounded portion of the seat c2, to rock withthe runner and knee, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. l y
GEORGE ALANSON LOGKWOOD.
