, FENCE.
No. 676,646. Patented Jan. 17.1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT VEEICEo vJOEL A. ELANAGAN, oE AIR MOUNT, MISSISSIPPI.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,646, dated January 17, 1888.
Application filed July 23, 1886. Serial No. 203,833. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom iv' may concern:
Beit known that I, JOEL A. FLANAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Air Mount, Yalabusha county, in the State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Swinging Fences, of which the following is so full, clear, and eXact a description as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in swinging fences; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 1
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View of a swinging fence constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the panels connected at both ends to posts, and also having the brace.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A represents the fence-panel sections constructed to carry ont my invention. The top rails of said sections extend a snfcient distance from the end braces, Lof-the fence-'panels to form bearings a', for a purpose presently explained.
The letter C represents posts located at the outer ends of the panels, and which are provided with b'earings b, into which are connected hooks or other suitable fastening devices, c, which are also attached to the bearing ends a of the fence-panels to raise the panels from the ground and allow them to have a swinging action.
The letter D denotes braces, which are pivoted at their upper ends to form tongs, their lower ends being secured to the bottom rails of the panels in any suitable manner to support the fence sections, and also keep the midT die part thereof a snilicient distance from the ground to admit of their being swung at this point. These braces D, being pivoted at their upper ends, admit of the sections being rapidly detached from one another by simply disconnecting said pivoted parts,wl|ich leave the braces permanently secured one to each section of the fence-panels.
I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise forms of fence panels as shown in my drawings, as I may, it' lso elect, construct the panels in picket, barbed wire, lattice, or other well-known forms of fenccpanels. I may also use posts at each end of the panels, with the panels swung thereto and with the braces connected to the lower parts ofthe panels, without departing from the true spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is,-
l. In a portable swinging fence, the combination, with the posts having the panels swung thereto, of the braces connected to said panels at their lower ends and pivotally connected at their upper ends, as shown and described.
2. In a portable swinging fence, the combination, with vthe posts havingv bearings, the panels, also having bearings, and a hook or link connected to said bearings, of the brace D, connected to the panels at its lower end,and having its upper ends pivotally and detachably connected together, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOEL A. FLANAGAN.
