T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN RICHARD CONRAD, of Long Pine, in the county of Brown and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oven-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means for accurately telling the heat or temperature of a stove-oven, and for inspecting the contents of the same without opening the door.
The invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A represents an ordinary cooking-stove, and B the oven-door. In the door 13, I form an opening, 2), preferably T-shaped, as shown, and over this opening I secure the isinglass or other transparentmaterial, O, by means of the securing-platc D. The upper portion of the plate D fits around the upper part of the opening b in the door, audits lower or stem portion, 6, is formed with a semicircular depression or groove, (1, for the reception of the thermome- The groove d of the plate D extends to the lower end of stem, and its middle portion is slotted, as shown, to permit a free circulation of the heat around the thermometer. This circulation of the heat may be increased by corrngating the stem transversely, the corrugations extending from the sides of the stem to the groove d. The lower portion of the isinglass or transparent material in front of the thermometer will be graduated as shown, the letters thereon representing the terms commonly used by cooks, viz: Warm, Slow,
Moderate, Quick, Hot, and Burning. The thermometer will be secured in the groove of the plate D by means of a fine wire, or by any other suitable means, and the plate is secured to the door by means of bolts 0.

By means of my improvement the contents of the oven can be readily inspected without opening the door, thereby saving time and trouble, to say nothing of the loss of heat incident to the repeated opening of the door. By my improvement, also, provision is made for accurately telling the heat or temperature of the oven, thereby doing away with guesswork and reducing baking to a science. If desired, a similar or other shaped opening covered with isinglass or other transparent material may be made in the other door, in order to afford more light.
Instead of graduating the isinglass orother transparent material, the graduation may be formed on the outside of the oven-door at one side of the slot; or the outside of the door may be made to receive a fancy nickeled design with a T-shaped opening, asin door, and upon this design the graduations will be formed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the thermometer and pane securing plate D for oven-doors, having an elongated opening in its upper part and provided with a grdove,
d, having aslot, d, in its lower or stem portion, as specified.
2. The combination, with an ovendoorhaving a T-shaped opening, of graduated transparent material over the said opening, a securing-plate having an elongated opening in its upper part and a socketin its stem portion, and a thermometer in said socket, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with an oven-doorprovided with a T-shaped opening, of the plate D, having an elongated opening in its upper part and provided with the slotted groove (1 d in its stem portion, the thermometer E in the said groove,and the graduated transparent material between the plate and door, substantially as herein shown and described.
