UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.Y
WILLIAM F. BENEDICT, OF NEY YORK, N. Y.
METALLIC TREE-BOX.
SSPECEFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,170, dated December 6, 1887.
Application filed July 19, 1887.
.To aZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Beit known that LWILLIAM F. BENEDIeT, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic rlree- Boxes, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being made therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to metallic boxes for the protection of trees; and it consists of a tree-box formed of wire-netting, the netting being corrugated vertically, and the upperl and lower edges protected and stiffened by a binding of sheet metal of such ornamental form as may be desired, and the vertical edges overlapping, in order that the treebox may be extensible in diameter, and thus adjustable to the gradual growth and increased girth of the tree which it encircles.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my improved tree-box. Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of the base. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of a fragment of the base of the tree-boX, showing the netting and metallic binding. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a fragment of the top of the tree-box, showing the finishing metallic binding ornamented by pickets of the same material.
A is the body of my tree box, constructed from a sheet of wireenetting, which may be of any desired form of meshes, either ornamental or plain. This netting is protected at its upper edge by an ornamental binding, B, provided with pickets, and at its lower edge by a plain binding, C, such bindings being made from sheet metal stamped out to proper con- 'formation, and secured to the nett-ing by com- Serial No. 244,716. (No model.)
pression and such additional fastening as may be desirable. The sheet of netting thus protected at top and bottom is corrugated by compression in suitable dies, or by passing the same through corrugating-rollers. The two side edges are brought together and lapped, as shown at A, Fig. 2; and after the tree-box thus formed is placed about the tree the edges may be secured inA any well-known convenient manner, and as the tree increases in size the fastenings may be removed and the tree-box enlarged correspondingly.
It is obvious that this tree-box may be constructed without the metallic binding at top and bottom, and that the wire-netting may be made with a selvage.
A treeboX constructed according to my in vention will be light, ornamental, strong, and durable, and its cost will be small.
I am aware of the existence of Letters Patent No. 135,685, which describe treeproteetors; but
'Vhat I claim as my'invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wirenetting tree-box corrugated vertically throughout and arranged to overlap in such manner that the corrugations will serve as a latch, having its upper and its lower edges protected and stift'ened by a binding of sheet metal.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
