FENCE-GUARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,571, dated December 22, '1896.

Application filed September 29, 1896. Serial No. 607,321. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SOMMEES CRowELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Guards for Fences, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a device for surmounting a garden-fence and supplemental therewith which has for its object the purpose of excluding predatory animals from an inclosure; and it consists of a series of metallic straps so bent longitudinally as to have their base portions resting upon the upper surface of the cap of a fence and secured thereon bymeans of an overlying strip, which when bolted or screwed down maintains the device in its vertical position, the sides of the straps from the base being bent so as to extend upward for attachment to a horizontal bar, and again bent over at their upper end to project downward at an acute angle outwardly from the vertical portions, and beveled upon their sides a short distance from their extremities to form sharp points thereon. In addition to the above-mentioned straps a series of intermediate spear-pointed short straps are projected from said horizontal bar, extending above the vertical straps secured to the cap of the fence, as will be more fully understood from the following detailed description and accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of a portion of a panel of a fence. Fig. 2 is an edge view of one of the series of straps A, with the intermediates b, the fence D, cap C, and overlying strip E being represented as in section. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the device, illustrating the method of joining two panels of a fence when arranged at right angles with each other.

Like letters of reference in all the figures indicate the same parts.

In Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings are represented a portion of a panel of a fence in which the series of straps A are formed of metallic bars so bent as to have the horizontal base portion a made to conform in shape but slightly less in width than the cap-piece C of the fence, (shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings,) or it may be placed on the upper board and the cap-piece placed between the upright portions of the straps, occupying the same position as the strip E, and secured in the same manner as represented by the series of screws b, one of which is shown lin said figure, said screws being arranged at intervals along the line of the panel, thereby ,binding the straps rigidly to the fence.

For greater security the rail G is placed between the upright portions of the legs, to which the latter are secured by means of bolts d.

The ends of the straps A are bent from the upper portion and made to project down and outwardly from the uprights at any desired angle as may be determined suitable, and beveled upon their sides at the extremities to form sharp points thereon for the purpose of preventing the passage beneath them of predatory animals.

Projecting upward from the sides of the rail G, and to which they are fastened by means of the series of bolts CZ', are the short straps A', which are beveled upon their extremities in the same manner as the free ends of the straps A. (Shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings.)

I claim as my invention--` The fence-guard consisting of the straps A, having the horizontal base portion a, resting upon the fence, and attached upon the fence by the strip E, screwed upon the cap C, the upper portions of the straps being bent down and outwardly from the upright at any angle therefrom, the rail G with the series of intermediate straps A', projecting above the rail G, the extremities of the two series of straps being beveled upon their sides and terminating in points, in combination with the upper edge of afence, substantially as shown and described` SOMMERS CROW'ELL. lVitnesses:
