No. 396,735. Patented Jan. 29, 1889i.

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
BRENSON DOITD, OF PERU, INDIANA.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,735, dated January 29, 1889.
Application filed $eptember 12, 1888. Serial No. 285,212. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRENsoN Dorn), a citizen of the United States, residing` at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inVent-ion, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an iniproveinent in fences; and niy said inVent-ion consists in the combination, in a :fence, with the Vertical posts, long'itudinal rails, and Vertical wires for suspending' said rails between the posts which Wire secured around the foot of thepost, then crossed back and forth around the end of each rail and over the top of the post, and secured by staples at each side of the rails, of a series of short wires secured at the ends of the rails, passed around the post, and secured thereto by staples, as and for the purposes as will be hereinafter inore fully described and form the subject-matter' of the appended claiin. t
In carrying` out the details of my invention I proceed as follows, reference being' had to the aceon11:anyini` drawings, forining a part hereof, and in which drawing'sW Figure 1 is a Vertical side elevation of a fence-panel and a portion of an adj acent panel construeted according` to niy invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 detail seetional Views.
The letter A designates the posts, whieh are to be set in the ground at any suitable distance apart; and B, the rails, which extend long'itudinally between the posts, and to which they are secured in the following inanner:
C is a double Wire, or wire of two strands, which, after being passed around the foot of the post, as at c, and secured at each side by staples Z), is then crossed back and forth around the Arails B, as at D. After this wire C has been crossed upon the top of the top rail it is carried across the top of the post A and there secured by a staple, as at a. It is then crossed upon the top of the top rail of the next succeeding panel, and then carried down Ward and around the end of eachof the rails in said second panel in a similar inanner as upon the first panel to the ground, after which it is again passed around the foot of the post A and secured by staples, as at b'. In addition to crossing the wire C back and forth around each rail, it is secured at each side of said rails B by staples, as at e; and to secure the panel at its center a short wire, E, is secured by a staple, (Z, to the outer end of the rails 3, which wire is then passed around the post and secured upon each side thereof by staples d'.
By the arrangeinent of the parts as here shown the panel is securely held between the posts at the top, bottom, and center thereof, and a simple and durable yet cheap and easilyconstructed fcnce is formed, not liable to be easily injured, and sufliciently strongI to resist breach y stock. i
The combination, in a fence, with the posts A, rails B, and Vertical wires C, said wires O being; secured around the foot of the post, then crossed back and forth around the end of each rail and over the top of the post, and secured by staples e at each side of the rail, of the short wires E, secured at the ends of the rails by staples (Z, passed around the posts A, and secured thereto by staples d', as described, for the purposes specified.
` BRENSON DOUD. In presence of- J. D. OATEs, THos. FILDEs.
