CATTLE-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 23, 1913.
Patented Dec. 16,1913. Serial No. 780,731.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonoe N. SOLOMON, a citizen of the United States. residing at Tlurlington. in the county of l reestone, 'State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Inn'irovements in Cattle-Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in railway guards, and particularly to guards for preventing cattle from passing along the railway.
One object of the invention is to improve the constructioi'i of devices of this character in the manner in which the same is attached to the rails.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, when taken in connection with the accon'ipanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the portion of a railway showing my invention in operative position. Fig. 2 is an end view. .l ig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertiail transverse sectional View on the line 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10-10 represents the rails of a railway to which my invention is attached. .lilXtei'iding transversely under the rails is a bar 11 this bar projecting beyond the rails on both sides of the railway. Each of the projecting ends carries a sleeve 12 which is 1n ovided with an upwardly exteiuling clamping finger 13 on the end adjacent the rail. This finger is formed to tightly grip the flange of the rail, as clearly shown. The bar 11 provided with a plurality of elongated slots 14 and 15, and passed through the sleeves 12 in the slots H are adjusting and clamping bolts 16. Slidably mounted on the portion of the bar '10 be tween the rails are the two sleeves 17, each of which carries a bolt 18 passed through one of the slots 15 of the bar 11. The outer end of each of the sleeves 17 has a rail flai'ige engaging linger 19 which engages with the flange of the rail between the rails. The bar .11 is mounted in brackets 90 which extend below the bases of the rails and are provided with fingers 21 for detachable engagement. with the base flanges of the rails. The brackets 20 and the fingers of the sleeves are so formed that the bar 11 is suspendeda spaced distance below the rails. Formed transversely through each of the fingers of the sleeves below the bases of the rails are openings 93, and extending through these openings and rotatable therein is a trans verse rock shaft 24. The ends of this shaft are turned downwardly and provided with the weights 25, suitable guard disks 26 being mounted on the ends of the shafts between the dmvnturned portions and the ends of the bar 11.. Secured to the rock shaft are the pickets 26, these pickets standing normally in a vertical position by reason of the depending position of the weights.
\Vhen a train passes over the guard, the same will be forced down between the tracks and held there until the train has gone by, after which the weights will rock the shaft. into normal position and the pickets extending vertically upward. 'hen in normal position, the device presents the appearance of a fence, thus preventing animals from passing up the track.
\V hat is claimed is A cattle guard for railways con'iprising a bar disposed transversely under the rails, brackets detachably disposed on the bases of the rails and supporting the said bar, rail engaging members mounted on the bar, said memliiers being adjustably slidable on the bar, a transversely extending rock shaft carried by the adjustable members, pickets carried by the rock shaft, and depending weights on the ends of the rock shaft.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in the presence of two WltIlLSSOS.
