PATENT FFICE.
MAXIMILIAN JOSEPH KOENIG, OF JERSEY SHORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
HEAD- REST.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,142, dated November 15,1887.
Application filed August 31,1886. Serial No. 212.326. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAXIMILIAN JOSEPH KOENIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey Shore, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Head-Rests for Railroad-Oars, 8m; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in portable head-rests to be used for travelingin railroad-cars and other conveyances, and is an improvement upon my inventions described in Letters Patent of the United States numbered, respectively, 290,644 and 319,980, issued to me, bearing date December 18, 1883, and June 16, 1885; and the presentinvention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved head-rest partially folded. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of Fig. 1 in a more fully closed position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same in its extended or operative position. Fig. 4' is a longitudinal sectional view through one of the arms and its attached parts, and Fig. 5 isa perspective view of the modification. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A represents the headrest, consisting of the upper angular sections, a,.having the head-piece I) connected thereto, the intermediate sections, 0 c, and lower sections, at d, which are pivoted at e to one another. The intermediate sections are pivoted at their lower ends to the upper ends of the lower sections, the ends f f of which latter sections project beyond the pivotal point, and the ends of the intermediate sections also proj ectbeyond their pivotal point for a purpose presently explained. The intermediate sections are provided with a cord or strap, by which the device is tied or buckled to the wearer, and'the same are also provided with a sliding loop or sleeve, B B, similar to the loop 0 O on the vertical lower portion of the angular sections aforesaid.
It will be seen that when the device is extended for use the different sections are straightened out, the extended ends of the lower lie flush with the intermediate section, and the extended ends of the intermediate section do likewise with the lower vertical portion of the angular section or rest for the head, after which the loops or slides are passed over said ends, and the sections are thus rigidly held to one another, and thus present two arms of V shaped form. The wearer then applies the device to the back and ties it on by the cord or strap above mentioned.
In folding the rest the loops are forced back,
thus freeing the extended ends and allowing the sections to be turned upon their pivots and folded.
In Fig. 5 I show a modification of my device, wherein the intermediate section is connected to the angular upper sections by the loops or guides B, which slide on.the intermediate section and are permanently connected to the angular sections of the rest.
'VVhat I claim is In a portable head-rest, the lower sections, d, pivoted to each other, the intermediate sections pivoted to the lower sections, and the upper angular sections, a, pivoted to the intermediate sections, 0, as described, and the flexible strip or support connected to the angular sections, whereby the sections are capable of being folded in a small compass, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' llIAXIllIILIAN JOSEPH KOENIG.
