SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,101, dated November 1887- Application filed September 10, 1887. Serial No.2-1SL315. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK SNYDER, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State ofPennsylvania,have invented certain new and 5 useful Improvements in Hard-Rubber Rolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the My invention consists in an improvementin rollers for-checkrein-hooks, buckles, and in all articles where metal or wooden rollers can be employed. V

The object of my invention is'to provide a roller which shall be simple in construction, of great durability, easy of application, and of little cost. These points, I elai in, are embodied in my roller, it being as durable, if not more so, than wood or metal, veryeasy of application, of little cost, and the amount of wear from friction is greatly reduced.

' My invention consists in a hollow cylinder, made of hard rubber, of sufficient size and thickness, which is split up the side, thus allowing the cylinder to expand, or by means of a pair of forceps to press it open in order to insert a bar.

The method of application is as follows: A

3c pair of forceps is inserted into one end of the cylinder, and then the arms of the forceps being pressed apart the slit in the side of the cylinder is also pressed apart, and through this slit may be inserted the axis on which the roller is to revolve. On withdrawing the for- 55 ceps the sides of the slit come together, and we have a roller completely covering the axis.

My invention may be better understood by reference to the drawings which accompany this specification, in which similar letters refer 0 to similar parts.

In Figure 1, A shows the roller as applied to my patent safety checkrein-hook, No. 362,466, of May 3, 1887, and Fig. 2 shows the mode of applying the roller and its application to the buckle.

Having thus described myinvention and the method of using it, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The herein-described roll, composed of hard rubber longitudinally Split, whereby it is adapted to be forced open and applied to buckle-frames, checkrein'hooks, &o., all substantially as set forth.
