WILLIAM S. WARREN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE A. MOORE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOILET-00MB.
Specification ofLetters Patent.
Patented March 31, 1908.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county gf Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet-Combs, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in toilet-combs, and a comb made in accord with my invention is provided with a back or grasping portion to which are attached revoluble teeth, such teeth being preferably tapered or conical and provided with s herioal terminals, as will be hereinafter set orth.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a toilet-comb for straightening and smoothing long hair that has become tangled more quickly and with less liability of injury to the hair than toilet-combs of ordinary construction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation showing a toilet-comb made in accord with my invention.v Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale of a part of a toilet-comb made as shown by Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are vertical sections showing modified forms of construction.
Referring to the drawings, A is the back, or that part of the comb that is grasped by the hand, and such part may be sheet metal or other suitable material, the longitudinal edges of such part being attached to a rigid tooth-carrying-bar B, by rivets c when the parts A and B are made of metal. The ends of the back are closed by the end pieces A they being attached to the back B by screws a', the closures A having attached thereto an inner plate a to form a shoulder upon which the ends of the part A will bear.
The tooth carrying bar B is provided with a longitudinal line of sockets B that are shaped to receive cylindrical ends of the teeth C, which are held in place so as to be free to turn or revolve by any suitable means, preferably as shown by Figs. 2 and 3, where the ends of the teeth that enter the back have internally threaded sockets for bolts l), the bolts passing through apertures which are of less diameter than the heads of the bolts, the heads 'bearing upon the upper side or face of the bar. The outer ends of the teeth are rounded or spherical and such ends may be integral with the teeth as shown by Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or may be a part of the cornecting means, as shown by Figs. 4, 5 an 6.
In the modification of my invention asshown by Fig. 4 4of thedrawings, a bolt D having a rounded head is passed through a longitudinally apertured tooth and engages a nut, so that both the tooth and bolt may turn. In Fig. 5, a bolt engages fiXedly with the tooth carrying bar, and in Fig. 6, a tooth support is formed integral with the back and a spherical headed bolt d enters the end of the part that is integral with the back to hold thereon a sleeve, such sleeve being maintained to readily turn upon the support.
The construction shown provides a comb with teeth that will turn when in use, and such a comb will Inore readily untangle and smooth hair and with less injury thereto than combs with rigid or immovable teeth. The invention may be embodied in a toiletcomb made of metal as aluminium, or in a composition comb, as rubber, celluloid, or other suitable material.
I claim.-
1. A toilet comb consisting of a rigid tooth-support to which is attached a plurality of revoluble teeth.
2. A toilet comb having conical teeth which are revolubly connected to the back of the comb.
3. A toilet comb provided with tapered teeth the ends thereof being rounded, and means for revolubly connecting the teeth to a back, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM s. WARREN.
