SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,045, dated November 15, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BIBLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses for Rupture, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to a novel construction of a truss forruptures in which is combined several principles never before known in a single device used for this purpose.
Heretofore pads for the truss were made to suit the case, thus necessitatinga special pad for each case. As it is seldom I iind two ruptures exactly alike, I propose to obviate this necessity, which is also objectionable, by substituting in place of the Old truss-a device that is capable ot' being adjusted in a manner to suit any case of rupture on` record without removing the pad or separating its parts and locking the pad when the position shall have been obtained.
, My invention consists of a rotary staff or other suitabledevice connected with a device or devices supporting a y detachable pad adapted to be adjusted at any angle desired, and mechanism for locking both the rotary staff or other-mechanism and the device or devices supporting the pad, all of which will be fully set forth hereinafter.

The hereinbefore-mentioned rotary staff e is provided with a threaded vertical perforation, g, adapted to receive a corresponding-th readed screw-stud, 7L, the point Of which engages with the perforations c of the semicircular flangeb2 when holding the pad b in a iiXed position.
The periphery of the rotary staff e, near the base thereof, is provided with a series of perforations, i, arranged on the same horizontal alignment and adapted to receive the point of the set-screw t" when holding the staff e in a Modus operandi-lVhen the nature of the case requires the pad to be adjusted from a horizontal position to that of an incline, and at the same time a rotary motion is necessary for the perfect adjustment, the following operations are deemed necessary to accomplish the desired result: Unscrew the stud h until its point shall have been released from the perforation c of the semicircular ilange b2, thus enabling the latter to be swung in either direction upon the arbor d,when the desired angle is obtained. Then screw up the stud h until its point shall have entered the perforation or indentation c, when the pad is heldin a locked position. It may now be necessary to rotate the pad in order to get it adjusted properly, and in order to do this the set-screw z" is released from the perforations or indentations t', thus enabling the devices carrying the inclined pad to be rotated until the desired position is obtained, and then the setscrew z" is again inserted. Thus locking the staff e in this position, the truss is ready for the patient.
I am aware that many other mechanical de vices may be combined to operate and produce the result desired. For instance, in lieuof having the rotary staff as represented in the drawings, I may use a staff with a ratchet on the lower extremity engaging with a pawl or IOO spring, whereby the same may be locked in position. I may also use, in lieu of the semicireular flange, a portion of a spur-wheel engagingwith pinion or rack-bar; orI may have the semicircular ange held in position by means of a set-screw passing through the upright and against a projection extending from the said semicireular flange. So it will be obvious that many combinations of devices may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with atruss for ruptures, of the pad screwed upon the plate provided wth the semicircnlar flange, the whole connected with devices for adjusting the same in any position desired, forthe purpose herein set folth.
2. The combination, with a truss for ruptures, of the rotary shalt provided with perfora tions on its periphery near the base thereof, the set-screw corresponding to and engaging with said perforations, the shoulder to rest upon the plate secured to the belt, the up rights with bearings for an arbor, the threaded vertical perforation, and the corresponding stud engaging therewith, the whole adapted to adjust in any position desired devices carrying a pad, all for the purpose as herein set forth.
3. The combination, substantially as shown and described, consisting of the detachable pad a, plate b, the vertical screw c, the semicircular Bange b2, the perforations c on the edge of said flange b2, the arbor d, uprights d', rotary shaft e, shoulder e', base-plate A, collar f, plate B, threaded perforation g, screwstud h, the perforations i, and set-screw i', the whole forming a complete Working device.
