Description
UNITED STATES E. OTIS FRINK, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND l PATENT OEEICEo S. O. FRINK, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKATES.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known unto you that I,'E. OTIs FRINK, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skates 5 and I do here y by declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot' the invention consists in the device whereby the skate is clamped to the foot and held firmly thereon, and the manner of operating the said device.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I proceed to describe it, asfollows, in construction and operation:
The skate is made oi the materials usually used for the manufacture ot' skates. N o. 4 of the said drawings represents the foot-rest of the said skate. Through the slots f and j" are placed the clamps D and D', with their outer edges resting against the guides d and d. Between the two clamps aforesaidu and resting in the ratchet-edges thereof, is placed the cog-wheel C, the whole being as represented by C, D, and D of Figure 2 of the said drawings. On the top ...of the cog-wheel U aforesaid is then riveted the spring-lever B of No. 7 of the said drawings, in such aposition that the pawl-edge g shall rest in the ratchet a, in manner and form as represented by B a g of Fig. 3 ot' the said drawings. The top is then inclosed by a plate, A, which is held down by a screw, b, which passes through the center of the cog-Wheel O aforesaid and fastens firmly in the body of the foot rest E, the whole, when completed, being as represented by Fig. l of the said drawings.
To operate my said improvement, the sole of the shoe is placed on the plate A between the two clamps D and D. The spring-lever B is then drawn forward by means of the hook No. l2 upon the ratchet a. The said lever B, being riveted to the cog-wheel c, carries it around through aportion of its circumference, which causes the clamps D and Dl to close upon the sole of the shoe. When it' is sufliciently tight, the pawl-edge g of the said lever B, resting in the ratchet a, as aforesaid, will hold it firmly in its position. When the said pawl gis raised from the ratchet, the shoesole is immediately released.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe ratchet A, the cog-wheel O, the guides d and d', the spring-lever B, and pawl g, when the same is operated, constructed, and arranged as described.
CLAUDE E. MoDoNALD, MERIT WELLS.
