Application filed April 12, 1910. Serial No. 554,909.
To all whom it may cou-cera:
,lle it known that i, .lessa l. hit/11TH, a citizen oi the United Stairs, residing at lichten, in the county ol Franklin and State ot lllinois, have invented new and useful ii'iiprovenients in 'lie-lullern7 of .vl'iich the following is' a specilieation.
Thisl intention relates to railroad tie pullers, and the object ot the. invention is to improve the device upon which l have reccif'cd United tahgs .Leiters lful'ent #Mil-,391, dated June 3th, 1905,'.
lilith the above ol. jee in vic the invention resides iu the novel coinsir'ucimi and (.:fnnbiuation of parte hcreinai'iter iully described and claimed.
ln the accomplinying is a top plan View of a de ice constructcffl in accordance with the pres ut invention and showing the saine ia position for remoring a tie. Fig- 2 ,is a longitudinal sectional View upon the line f---/ ot' Fig. 1. Fig 3 is a transi'erse seeti al view upon the line of Fig. 1. Fi:v 4e is a perspective vieiv of the Winch. Fig. is' a :side elevation of the main ratchet wheel. Fig. G a detail perspectiif-c view of the loiver portion or socket piece oit' the operating handle.
In the device illustrated and described in connection with my patented rail puller #924.391, above noted, the main ratchet, Wheel operating Winch is connected Wi th the said Winch through the medium of a key. The ratchet wheel is provided with a circular recess corresponding with he cross sectional contour of the Winch and this means of attaching the ratchet Wheel to the winch has been found by experience to be defective inasn'iuch as a key is frequently broken when the winch is ol'ierated, thus necessitating great delay and annoyance. Furthermore the ratchet being keyed to the winch is free to slide so that the socketpiece of the operating handle as Well as the ratchet Wheel have been frequently Worked away from the key. These are the primary objections Which the present application is designed to overcome, but there are other minor objections which Will be apparent as the description progresses.
In the accompanying drawings the nu.- nierals 1 designate the blocks, Which are similar in construction to my patented device, the same being provided With pivoted hook blocks 2. The blocks 1, in the present instance, are connected together through the lrawings, l `igure 1 medium ol spaced rods El, the name being connected in any suitable .manner with the said blocks` l.
rlhe numeral l designates the improved winch. This Winch is ol" the ordinary iiouiuled cross sectioi'ial ioifiuatioii, but is proiided with a pair olt spared collars or .flanges 5. 'il T is retained upon the inc .he medium oi" a suitable tia.' which connected vrith the through the ineiiiuin oi" a l: curing element. The oppf I" with an nate-d by ed portion 12 extends a. non-circula 13, and the non-circular i A r.i=: n 1: provi with a reduced rounded portion 111-. l extension further i' i"oi'i .ed Tivi-.lili a s Smaller rounded pc on 15 and this portion oi the Winch terminates in a noneircular end designated by the nui'neral 1G. The ein cular portion 15 is adapted tu' the reception of a toothed Wheel 1'? while the roi ided poi-tion 15 serves as a bearing for the olocl; 1. The toothed Wheel l? is retained upon the end oi" the Winch through the medium of' a suitable collar or flange 1S, similar to the flange or collar upon the opi osliitc 0nd ot the said Winch and the block 1 i a. gravity dog 19 which engages the teeth ot' the Wheel 17.
rThe numeral 2O designates the operating lever. This lever E20 has its lower portion provided with a socket piece 21, the latter comprising a pair of downwardly extending arms Q2 and 23. The arm 23 is provided with an enlarged circular opening 211, which is adapted when in position upon the Winch l to engage With the rounded enlarged portion 12 thereof. The arms 22 and Q3 are spaced apart a distance equaling the length of the non-circular portion 13 of the Winch and the arm 22 is provided With a smaller circular opening 25 which is adapted to engage With the similar circular porenlarged rounded the numeral From this roun tion 14: of the said Winch. 'The socket piece' of the operating handle 20 is; provided with a Weighted pivoted dog 2G, the purpose oi which will presently he apparent.
The nnineral 27 denignatee'i the winch operatingl ratehet wheel. This wheel 27 in '|'n'o'vided with a (zentral squared opening 2S, the latter heine' adapted to engage the 4squared hearing; fairlare l olf the 'winch ffl. lt will he tnrt'lier noted that the arin 22 heingY provided with a Small. opening' 253 envgrlxg'es the rounded portion lfland contante with the Squared portion 13 of the winch so aS to prevent the lateral. i'i'io'veiiiei'it ol the handle in the direetion of the ilai'ige 5.
