TO VALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;

Be it known that I, CYRUS C. CLAPP, of the cityand county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Device for Turning Leaves of Books; and I do hereby declaro that the same is described and represented in the following specication and drawings; and to enable others skilled in the nrt to make and use the same,I'will proceed to describe its construction and operation by referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.

The nature of this improvementconsists in simplifying the mechanism, so as to renderit easier and cheaper ot' manufacture, and more convenient and desirable for'use. In the accompanying drawings- Figure l yis a frontielevation.

Justl back of the arms-z' are arranged detents e", by means of which said arms are held back in readiness for action. z' 1"( are elastic cords, one end of whichis secured in the groeve edge of the wheelsf, while the other hasn knot tied at any desired point ator near the end thereof, which'is held securely by placing said knot in one of the slits of the rack `p p are dogs, arranged between studs upon the back side `of the plate e, having springs g for holding their front ends closely against the edge of the wheels f. k is a sliding-plate, having a linger-knob, m, ratchetnfand a protuberance, o, which extends back So that when the slide is moved up or down said protuberance acts to lift the front end of the dogs .p from the deteutsfz", (one at a time,) and allow the arms t', (held back by saiddogs 11,) by the action ofthe elastic cords i, -or their equivalents, to be thrown forward from right to left. Said plate 7c is arranged just at one side of and at right-angles with the wheelsf. r is a pedal, secured upon a shaft, a, which has its bearings in the posts sfi' 0n the outer end of this shaft s is secured an arm, t, having an angle pawl, u. This pawl is held up to and works in the ratchet niby a spring, a2) to disengage. the detent z'ifrom the dogs p in the edge of the wheels f. The rack end of said pawl is provided for the purpose of lifting the pawlkfrom the ratchet n, `when it is desirable to* return it (the ratchet) toits starting or resting place, which may be done by pressing at the 'same time the rack end of the pawl and the knob m, when the arms (when turned back from left to right) will bc in readiness to 1turn a leaf, when desirable. The book-holder d is made in spring form, the end of which extends upward through a slit in the upper side of the framework, so as to allow it to move back and forth to receive a book or music-sheet. Said spring or holder is or may be made either inrne or two pieces, as desirable, so as to allowit to be attached ordctached at pleasure. w is a pad, for the arms z'lto strike against, as they ily back from right t'o left, or from one sideto the other.

Now it will be readily seen that the frame b can be easily and quickly attached and detached to or from the common book-rack, when desirable, by means of hooks c, or their mechanical equivalents; also, that by hearing down the rack end of the pawl u, and at the same time pressing down the plate byits knob m, and then turning the armsf back from left to right, and then engaging the clips l to the leaves of a book, they may be quickly and successively turned,l as desirable, by simply pressing the pedal r.

The clips 1 are secured loosely to the end of the arms z'fwhiohare provided with two or more holes, 2, near their outer ends) by means of an elastic cord, 3, passing through said holes, so as to allow of its being lengthcned ershortened, as may be desirable, simply by pulling thercord. Directly under the back end of the pedallever is arranged apad, x', for tbe said lever to rest upon as it is reacted by the springg/ arranged upon the shaft s.
