F. J. HERPERS AND M. M. SOMMER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent N 99,568, dated February 8, 1870.
SHEET-MUSIC TURNER .AND HOLDER The Schedule referred to in than LetterlPat-ent and mning part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, F. J. HERPERS and M. M. SOMMER, of Newark, inthe county of Essex, and
' State of New Jersey, have invented a new andv improved Sheet-Music Holder and Turner; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to mak'e and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
V'.lhis invention relates to improvements in apparatus to facilitate the holding and turning of the music-` sheets by the performer, so as not to interrupt the playing; and v 1t consists inthe application, to any music-.sheet holder, ofspring-actnated turning-arms, arranged to he held by a button, and to throw the sheets over when let go,aud provided with a ratchet and springpawl, by which the operator may instantly disconnect one arm at a time, by a touch of the pawl.'
The` invention also comprises an' improved springclamping attachment, for connecting the holder to the stand.
Fgnrel represents a front elevation of our improved apparatus;
Figure 2 is a transverse section ofthe same; and
Figure 3 is a` detail view of the ratchet and fpawl.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the stand, which maybe permanently or detachably connected to the piano.
B is the holder, provided with the usual springclamp C.
D are the sheet-turning arms. They have spring- `lingers E at the outer ends, to enga-ge the leaves or at the right handof the centre, when properly adjusted, will hold them in check, as shown in iig. 1.
This button is provided with a boss, H, which has ratchet-notches von its face, and a spring-pawl, I, oonnected .to a finger-lever, L, pivoted to 'the vholder at K, is arranged with the saidA boss, so that when the lever is moved,it will turn the button suficiently to allowone arm to escape from it. The said arm will then be turned over to the left by the spring connected to it.
In this way, the arms being properly adjusted under the button, and their fingers engaged with the leaves, the operator may cause the turning of the leaves, while playing, by touching the level' L, which he may do quickly, without interruption of the mnsic.
The music-holder is. jointed at M, and the part below the joint is provided with the legs N and a springlever, O, while the upper part has -the spring-legs P and other springs, Q, bearing against them. These legs Naud P are placed on opposite sides of a rib, It, on the stand A, or it may be on the pianoframe, and the spring-leverO, which is set so as to pressrearward at its free -end, is sprung up on the upper side of the top of the frame B, and has the et'- fect to cause the legs N and l) to pinch the rib R with sufficient force to hold the apparatus tirnily in position.
Having thus described our invention,
XVe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the spring-turning arms D, retaining-button, ratchet, and spriug-pawl, arranged on a suitable holder, all substantially as specified.
2. VThe combination, with the holder jointed at M, and provided with the legs N P, ofA the spring-lever O, substantially as spccilied.
The' above specification of our invention signed by us, this 29th day of December, '1869.
F. J. HERPERS. Witnesses: M. M. SOMMER.
