Specification of Letters Patent.

To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLLAM B. WAIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plate-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a plate holding device for attaching and adjusting an embossing or printing device on to the cylinder or bed of an embossing or printing press.
The plate consists of thin flexible metal,
' and it is the principal object of the invention to strainthe plate on to the cylindrical sup port and hold it securely in place whileit is in action.
The holding devices consist of a jaw which coacts in combination with a shaftfor clamping the plate securely to the cylinder. One ofthe main objects of the invention resides in the peculiar method of actuating the jaw so that the plate can readily be adjusted to the proper position or alinement on the cylinder, or when desired can be quickly removed. The support carries a plurality of shafts to which the plate is connected and by operating a shaft the plate can be snugly seated on the cylinder, and at the same time the tail of the plate is securely clamped by means of the movable jaws in connection with its shaft.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a cylindrical support embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical detail section taken along the line w a: Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a similar section showing the clamp in a different position.
In this drawing the letter a designates a support or cylinder and b is a plate supported on the cylinder and preferably adapted for embossing characters on a sheet of paper. The cylinder has the usual recesses or gaps 0 located in theperiphery of the cylinder. These recesses serve to house the plate holding devices as will be hereinafter described. The cylinder carries a series of shafts (l and 6 respectively extending the length of the recess and journaled in the side walls of the cylinder. The shafts have angular ends so that a key or wrench can be employed to turn the shaft. Each shaft has a ratchet f with a pawl g to prevent reverse movement of the shaft. The pawl can be moved out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchet by means of a device k such as a setscrew. The shaft d is provided with hooks i for engaging perforations located near one end of the plate. This portion of the plate constitutes the head, and the tail end is clamped betweena jaw j and the said shaft 6.
The devices for operating the jaw comprise a plunger 70 best seen inv Figs. 3 and 4, slidingly mounted in a slotted tubular post m fixed in a recess. The jaw is fulcrumed at n to an upper extension of the post. To the upper portion of the plunger is pivoted one end of a link 0 the other end of the link being connectedto the jaw. To the lower end of the plunger is pivoted another link 7) which is connected to a lug 9 located at the lower portion of the said shaft 0. The under side of the jaw is provided with a projecting device 1' of suitable construction to engage a notch or depression in the tail of the plate.
When it is desired to'place a plate in position on the cylinder, the head thereof will hook on to the shaft d and the pawls moved from the teeth ofthe ratchet, the head of the plate is then positioned on to the shaft 6 and the shaft is operated by means of a key to swing the jaw into the position shown in Fig. 3, to clamp the plate between the shaft and the jaw. The pawls are then moved into engagement with the teeth of the ratchet and the shaft (Z rotated to strain or seat the plate. WVhen the plate is to be removed from the cylinder all that is necessary, is to move the pawls out of engagementwith the ratchet and rotate the shaft 6 to oscillate the jaw upward as indicated in Fig. 4. r
' It will be seen that when the shaft 6 is rotated to swing the jaw downward toward the shaft the pawl clicks over the teeth of the ratchet and the jaw is therebyv locked by preventing retrograde movement of the shaft.
I claim:
1. In a plate holding device, the combination with a support having a plate mounted thereon, of a shaft carried by the support, a jaw to engage the shaft for clamping the plate against the shaft, and means actuated by the shaft for oscillating the jaw.
In a plate holding device, the combination with a cylindrical support having a plate mounted thereon, of a shaft carried by the support, a jaw to engage the shaft for clamping the plate against the shaft, and means operated by the shaft for oscillating the jaw to release the plate.
3. In a plate holding device, the combination with, a cylindrical support having a plate mounted thereon, of a shaft rotatively carried by the support, a jaw to engage the shaft for clamping the plate against the shaft, means operated by the shaft for oscillating the jaw, and means for locking the aw.
4. In a plateholding device, the combination with a cylindrical plate support having a plate mounted thereon, of a shaft rotatively carried by the support, a jaw to engage the shaft for clamping the plate against the shaft, means operated by the shaft for oscillating the jaw, and means engaging the shaft for locking the jaw.
5. In a plate holding device, the combination with a cylindrical support having a plate mounted thereon, of a shaft rotatively carried by the support, a jaw to engage the shaft for clamping the plate against the shaft, a plunger connected to the jaw, and means operated by the shaft for actuating the plunger tomove the jaw.
6. In a plate holding device, the combination with a cylindrical plate support,.of a shaft rotatively carried by the support, a jaw eoacting with the shaft for clamping the plate against the shaft, 'a plunger linked to the jaw, and means connected to the shaft and the plunger for oscillating the jaw.

In a plate holding device, the combination with a cylindrical plate support, of a shaft rotatively carried by the support, a jaw coacting with the shaft for clamping the plate, a plunger linked to the jaw, a link pivoted to the shaft, and connected to my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
