BUNDLING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 774,226, a e November 8, 1904.
Application filed July 2, 1904.
1'0 all whom, it DMZ/Z] concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANK P. WISEBURN, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and LoUIs BUHLE, residing at I Voodhaven, in the county of Queens, State of New York, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Bundling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
ur invention relates to means for securing samples of tobacco, as set forth in our Letters Patent No. 677,488, dated July 2, 1901, and is an improvement on the form of apparatus disclosed in our Letters Patent N 0. 734,488, dated July 21, 1902, the object being to facilitate and quicken the operation of applying the binder.
The invention consists in the special construction and arrangement of parts hereindescribed and claimed specifically.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of our improved binding apparatus; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a side elevation; Fig. 4, a sectional elevation upon plane of line 4 4, Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a similar view showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of the actuating-lever.
A is the table or bed-plate of the apparatus, formed for attachment to any suitable support and provided with the downwardly-projecting flanges a 6/, upon and between which are mounted the rock-shafts o c, to which are secured the segmental gears (Z d, which mesh, each having an arm (Z (Z therewith, upon which arms are mounted the eccentric clamps e 6, provided with the handles 6 e the clamping devices thus formed being the equivalent of and operating in the same manner as the eccentric clamp shown and described in our Letters Patent No. 724,488, hereinbefore referred to.
The table A is formed with the lateral slots or recesses (f a to admit of the passage of the arms (Z (Z R is a ratchet-wheel rigidly secured to the formed integral Serial no. 215,117. (No model.)
wheel when desired, as hereinafter set forth.
L is a hand-lever mounted loosely upon the shaft 0 and provided with an auxiliary spring latch-lever m, pivotally secured thereto and formed withthe ratchet-tooth m for engagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel R, this engagement being maintained normally and automatically by the spring m The operation is as follows: The pawl P being temporarily disengaged from the ratchetwheel R, the actuating-lever L is raised, thereby by reason of the engagement with the tooth m of the ratchet-wheel R rocking the shafts o 0' so as to bring their arms (Z (Z into the slots (1, a and into the desired relation with the central portion of the table a", upon which the hanks of tobacco forming the sample S are placed, resting upon the binding-tape B, which has already been placed in position, the pawl P having in the meantime been released, so as to engage automatically the ratchet-wheel R and prevent the rotation of the latter in one direction-namely, the right, as shown in the drawings. The ends of the binding-tape being now secured by the eccentries e e, the depression of the actuating-lever L draws the band B taut around the sample S, the pawl P preventing slip or retractile movement. If it is desired to raise the lever L in order to conveniently rotate the ratchetwheel R still further, the pawl-arm m is depressed against the resistance of the spring m thereby releasing the tooth m from the ratchet-wheel, the release of the pawl-arm m allowing the spring 922 to return the tooth m into engagement with the ratchet-wheel R at the desired elevation.
It is obvious that, if preferred, the actuatinglever L may be secured directly to the rockshaft 0 or ratchet-wheel R in cases in which the extent of motion imparted to the tightening-arms (Z (l by a single downward stroke of the lever 'L would be sufficient to take up and draw taut the binder B around the sample S, so that we do not confine ourselves strictly to the use of the spring-lever m and pawl m and which are designed mainly for convenience in that two or more short strokes of the lever may be resorted to in tightening the band, if desired.
hat we claim as our invention, to secure by Letters Patent, is

In binding apparatus of the character designated, the combination of a supportingtable, two meshing segmental gears mounted under said table and each provided with a tightening-arm formed integral therewith, band-clamping devices on each of said tightening-arms and means for rocking said segmental gears, for the purpose set forth.
2. In binding apparatus of the character designated, the combination of a supportingtable, two meshing segmental gears mounted under said table and each provided with a tightening-arm formed integral therewith, band-clamping devices on each of said tightening-arms, means for rocking said segmental gears, and means for preventing the retractile movement of the said segmental gears, for the purpose set forth.
3. In bundling apparatus of the character designated, the combination of a supportingtable, two meshing segmental gears mounted under said table and each provided with a tightening-arm formed integral therewith, band-clamping devices on each of said tightening-arms, a ratchet-wheel integrally connected with one of said segmental gears, a hand-lever for actuating said ratchet-wheel, and means for preventing the retractile movement of the said ratchet-Wheel, for the purpose set forth.
4:. In bundling apparatus of the character designated, the combination of a supportingtable, two meshing segmental gears mounted under said table and each provided with a tightening-arm formed integral therewith,
