ROBERT MARSHALL, OF HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
RECEPTACLE FOR INK, 80C.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,547| dated November 1l 1887.
Application filed Marchi?, 1887. Serial No. 231,203. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT MARSHALL, a subject ofthe Queen of Great Britain, residing at Hamilton, in the county of XVentworth, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Receptacles for Ink and otherSubstauces,of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to an improvement in receptacles or holders for ink and other substances, set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 1n which- Figure l is a front elevation of a receptacle, such as an inkstaud. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane :r a", Fig. l. Fig. 3 isa plan view, parts being broken away.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a case or support of suitable material, such as wood or metal. Receptacles or fountains B C D are placed on the support A. Covers orlidsV E F G protect the contents ofthe receptacles.
The covers E FG are respectively supported by or connected to arms or levers H I K,swing ing on suitable pivots or fulcra, L. The lidlevers H I K are adapted to actuate levers M O P, swinging about pivots or fulcra N Q R. In the drawings the lid F is shown as being open. It' another lid-l`or example, lid G-is now opened, the lid-lever K of the lid G will actuate the lever I. The motion of the lever P thus produced will actuate the lidlever I to close the lid F. If the lid G is open and another lid-such as the lid E or the lid F-is opened, the consequent motion ofthe lid-lever H or I acting on the lever M or P will actuate the lid-lever K to close the lid G. Thus it will be noticed that the opening of any lid, E F or G, will close any of the otherlids that may be open,as the closinglevers M P O connect each lid-lever H K I with all the remaining lidle vers. Not more than one fountain, B, O, or D, can thus be open at any one time.
In case the various fountains contain various contents-such for example, as various kinds of inks or writing-Hinds, or various kinds of colors-that fountain whose contents are to be used at any one time can be opened, whereby a closing of the other fountains is obtained. The artist or operator thus has access to the material he is using at the time; but he is prevented from accidentally inserting his pen, brush, or other instrument into the wrong fountain. Mistakes and delays, because of the use of a wrong fluid or material, are thus prevented.
To protect the interior of the case or support A, a lid or cover, T, may be hinged or secured to the case A. Holders or racks S,for the support of pencils, pcnholders, brushes, and other tools, may also be provided.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a series of receptacles or fountains, B C D, provided with lids or covers. of levers or connections communieating with said lids, said levers or connections being made to operate by the opening of one lid to close the other lids, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a series of receptacles or fountains provided with lids or covers,of lid-levers communicating with said lids, and closing-levers connecting each lid-lever with all theremaining lid-levers,substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' ROBERT MARSHALL. [L s] Witnesses:
W. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
